Cal U suffers loss at Shepherd, 5-2

Gallagher, Winseck earn third win this year in singles, claim third doubles victory this fall

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 12) – The Vulcans closed out the fall portion of their schedule with a 5-2 loss at league-newcomer Shepherd on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team drops to 0-4 in dual matches. Meanwhile, the Rams move to 1-2 this fall after previously being a charter member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC).

The Rams claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches on Saturday. Senior Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and sophomore Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) earned their third win of the year at first doubles by posting a 6-3 victory over Valentina Preciado-Bello and Claire Dean. At the second slot, sophomores Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) were blanked by a 6-0 count by Isabella Mascari and Ally Frushour. Junior Alexa Uhlyar (Finleyville, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Annie Miller (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) also suffered a 6-0 loss on Saturday to Morgan Burner and Keana McManus at the third position.

Shepherd secured the match victory on Saturday by winning four of the six singles matches. Winseck collected a 6-1, 6-1 win at the first slot over Preciado-Bello and Gallagher earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Dean at the second position. Gallagher and Winseck tied for the team lead with three wins in singles play during the fall.

McDaniel dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match at third singles to Mascari and Camargo suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss against Frushour at the fourth position. Uhlyar fell by a 6-2, 6-2 count at the fifth slot against Burner, while Miller was downed by a 6-0, 6-1 count by Anna Ours at sixth singles.
