Cal U shutout against Bloomsburg, 2-0

Sinatra collects five saves in third start; Vulcans held to just two shots, zero corner kicks

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 8) – On a rainy afternoon, the Vulcans surrendered a pair of second-half goals on Saturday afternoon in a 2-0 shutout loss versus Bloomsburg at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 1-3 this season with a 0-3 record in league action. The Vulcans were shutout for the first time this season after scoring a goal in their opening three contests. Meanwhile, the Huskies move to 3-1 overall with an identical conference mark.

The Vulcans posted the opening shot of the contest when senior Olivia Bryan (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) had an attempt blocked in the box at the 2:33-mark. Sophomore goalkeeper Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) came up with four saves in the first half, including a punch save over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Sophomore Briana Bracero (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) registered the best scoring chance for the Vulcans after going one-on-one with the goalie, but missing the shot just left of the net. Bloomsburg took a 9-2 shot advantage into the break, while the game remained scoreless.

In the second half, Sinatra made another save off a header, as the Cal U defense held off another Husky attack. Bloomsburg found the back of the net in the 62nd minute when a free kick from sophomore Lauren Hoelke hit the post before being put into the goal off a rebound from senior Taylor Sneidman. At the 71:38-mark, the Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 with sophomore Alex Burrows scoring on header off a corner kick from Hoelke. Cal U was held without a shot in the second half and failed to register a corner kick.

Sinatra made her third start of the season and tallied five saves in 90 minutes of action.

Bloomsburg finished the game with a 16-2 shot advantage, including seven on goal, and held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 12, when they travel to face Edinboro at 6 p.m.
