Ross registers third goal of the season; Vulcans hold 20-6 edge in shots

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 29) – Despite a second-half goal by sophomore Zana Ross (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf), the Vulcans fell by a 2-1 count versus Mansfield on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic (PSAC) play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team drop to 1-8-1 overall behind a 0-8-1 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers secured their first win of the year to improve to 1-8 this season, all in conference play.

Mansfield scored at the 8:01-mark of the first half on the initial shot of the contest to take a 1-0 lead on a goal from senior Bria Bittiger with an assist from junior Chelsea Thomas. The Vulcans responded with an offensive push that produced four shots and two corners in a 12-minute stretch. The Mountaineers countered with a pair of attacks that required junior Reilly McGlumphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) to register two saves. Mansfield took a 1-0 advantage into the break, while Cal U held a slight 5-4 edge in shots.

In the second half, the Mountaineers once again struck early on a goal from junior Alexis Bittel off a feed by teammate Cay McNichol in the 47th minute to give Mansfield a 2-0 lead. The Vulcans responded with four shots, including two on goal, and a corner kick in just over a four-minute span. Cal U eventually broke through at the 56:30-mark with a goal from Ross, her third of the season, assisted by senior Danielle Koehler (Coal Center, Pa./California) to trim the deficit to 2-1. Cal U held Mansfield without a shot the remainder of the second half, while the Vulcans produced several scoring chances. The Mountaineer goalkeeper tallied all seven of her saves in the final 45 minutes, as Mansfield held onto the win.

McGlumphy posted three saves in 90 minutes of play in the losing effort after making her third start in the past four matches.
