Vulcans blanked by Mercyhurst in PSAC play, 2-0

Sinatra registers four saves in losing effort; Cal U out-shot by a 16-4 margin

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 3) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team was unable to overcome a goal midway through the first half and later allowed an 'own goal' in a 2-0 loss to Mercyhurst on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 1-9-1 this season with a 0-9-1 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Lakers improve to 6-4-1 overall behind a 4-4-1 mark in conference action.

Cal U recorded a shot on goal just 69 seconds into the start of the contest before being limited to a pair of shots in the first half. The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Maya Fanazini scored her team-leading third goal of the season off a pass from Naomi James. Mercyhurst finished the first half with a 6-2 shot advantage and maintained a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the 57th minute, the Lakers stretched the lead to 2-0 on an 'own goal' after the ball deflected off the head of a Cal U defender and went into the net. Mercyurst nearly added an insurance goal with 20 minutes remaining before a shot deflected off the post and Cal U was able to clear the ball.

Sophomore Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) tallied four saves on Wednesday while playing all 90 minutes for the first time since Sept. 15.

The Lakers finished the game with a 13-4 shot advantage and also posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when it travels to face No. 7 West Chester at 2:30 p.m.
