Julia Darminio (Sykesville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) scored the game-tying goal with just over seven minutes left in regulation, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
With the tie, the Vulcans move to 1-7-1 this season with a 0-7-1 mark in conference play. The tie, which equals one point in the league standings, snaps a seven-game losing streak for Cal U. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks stand at 4-3-1 overall behind a 3-3-1 record in league action.
IUP tallied four shots in the opening 11 minutes of the game with a shot deflecting off the post before junior
Reilly McGlumphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) made a save four minutes later. The Vulcans threatened to take the lead with 12 minutes remaining before the break with a pair of shots and one corner kick in a span of 90 seconds.
In the second half, the Crimson Hawks took a 1-0 lead at the 56:26-mark when freshman Mahogany Willis scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Both teams applied offensive pressure midway through the half with McGlumphy tallying a pair of saves and Cal U collecting three shots. Maya Willing (Marietta, Pa./Donegal). Both teams were unable to fire a shot in the final minutes of regulation, as the Vulcans and Crimson Hawks were whistled for offsides three times.
Cal U managed a shot on goal in the opening minute of the initial overtime before IUP seized control and posted three shots before the end of the period. The Crimson Hawks continued to apply pressure in the second overtime with five shot attempts and were whistled for offsides twice.
McGlumpy finished with seven saves while playing a career-high 110 minutes on Wednesday. She has posted a combined 16 saves over her last two games.
IUP recorded a 23-11 shot advantage, including a combined 8-1 margin in overtime, and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when it hosts Mansfield at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, starting at 12 p.m.
