Jermal Martin, Jr. registered a pair of interceptions inside the Cal U 10-yard line and redshirt sophomore defensive back
Jimmy Pierce posted a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown. Junior
Nelson Brown set a career high with three rushing touchdowns and finished with 132 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Freshman quarterback
Noah Mitchell totaled 325 passing yards and three touchdowns, including one rushing.
• The Vulcans have won the last 13 meetings in the series with the Fighting Scots. Cal U has also won seven-straight meetings in the series at Adamson Stadium with its last home loss to Edinboro coming in 2002.
• A longtime assistant with the program,
Wayne Bradford is in his second season as head coach at Edinboro. He served as interim head coach in 2017 before having the interim tag removed following the season. Bradford has posted a 10-4 mark as head coach of the Fighting Scots after spending a decade as the defensive coordinator. He also served seven years as the defensive line coach at Edinboro.
• Following a win last week, Edinboro is off to its second 3-0 start in three years. The Fighting Scots lead the PSAC and rank eighth in the country in scoring offense at 46.3 points per game. Juniors
Walter Fletcher and
Ta'Nauz Gregory have already combined for 11 touchdowns, while Edinboro debuts a first-year starting quarterback. Fletcher leads the league with 359 rushing yards this season after bursting on the national scene last year by setting a school record with 1,740 rushing yards. The 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Gregory sits third in the league with 321 receiving yards and is tied for the conference lead with four touchdowns. Edinboro also features one of the most veteran wide receivers in the PSAC in senior
James Clark, who has nearly 2,500 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns in his career. While the offense is averaging over 45 points, the Fighting Scots lead NCAA Division II with 10 interceptions and 16 turnovers forced. Three different players already have recorded at least two interceptions, including senior linebacker
Trey Hall who leads the team with 24 tackles. Junior defensive back
Brandon Anderson has tallied 21 stops after leading the team with nearly 100 tackles last season. Classmate
Zuril Hendrick already has recorded a pair of interceptions after leading the country last year with nine interceptions. On special teams, freshman
Jake Monroe has converted 19-of-20 PAT attempts and
Gregory is a premier return specialist with four returns for touchdowns in his career following a 90-yard kickoff return this year.
• Cal U has won its last 13 PSAC West openers following a 44-41 victory over Seton Hill last year. Over the last decade, the Vulcans have scored an average of 36.9 points in their opening game of divisional play while facing only four different opponents, including Edinboro five times (2008, 2012-15). Cal U hasn't lost its opening game in PSAC West play at home since 2000.
• The Vulcans are making their home debut this weekend after starting the year with three-consecutive road game for the first time since 1980. Cal U also ended last season with three-straight road games and has been without a home game for 329 days. Since 2000, the Vulcans have posted a 15-3 record in their home openers.
• Junior
Nelson Brown set a career high with three rushing touchdowns last weekend at Shippensburg. He also finished with a season-high 132 rushing yards on 23 attempts for his first 100-yard game of the year. Brown ranks among the top five in the PSAC this season in attempts, rushing yards and touchdowns. The last player with three rushing scores in a game was
John Franklin III in Week 4 of the 2015 season.
• Last week, Cal U recorded five interceptions at Shippensburg after entering the game with no forced turnovers this season. Redshirt sophomore
Jimmy Pierce posted a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, while freshman
Jermal Martin, Jr. made a pair of interceptions inside the Cal U 10-yard line. Junior
Lamont McPhatter II also registered an interception after leading the team with five in 2017.
• Freshman quarterback
Noah Mitchell posted 325 passing yards on 21-of-30 attempts last week at Shippensburg. He is first quarterback with three-consecutive games of at least 300 passing yards in the same year since
Peter Lalich accomplished the feat in five-straight games in 2012. Mitchell ranks second in the country with 1,072 passing yards and is one of only two quarterbacks with at least 1,000 passing yards already this year.
• In his first career start, freshman defensive back
Jermal Martin, Jr. led the team with 10 tackles and recorded a pair of interceptions at Shippensburg. He is the first player to post multiple interceptions in a game since
Aaron Terry in 2013. Martin helped keep Shippensburg scoreless in the first half, as both of his interceptions came inside the Cal U 10-yard line before halftime.
• Cal U enters the weekend with the most prolific trio of wide receivers in the PSAC this fall. Redshirt junior
Jordan Dandridge, junior
Chad Livingston and sophomore
Tyson Hill each rank among the top 10 in the league in both receptions and receiving yards. Dandridge is tied for the PSAC lead with 21 receptions and Livingston sits fourth in the conference with 314 receiving yards.
• The initial five opponents for the Vulcans this year have already posted a 13-2 record this fall. Last season, those same five teams tallied a 45-13 mark for a .776 winning percentage with each team winning at least seven games and two teams capturing conference titles. Additionally, two programs also made the 2017 NCAA Playoffs.
• The Vulcans continue to lead the PSAC through the opening three weeks of the season in time of possession, averaging 34 minutes, 1 second per game. Cal U holds nearly a 90-second advantage over the rest of the 15-team league in the category. The Vulcans also pace the conference with a combined 77 first downs, totaling at least 24 first downs in the initial three games.
• Last week, freshman defensive lineman
Gerald Brown recorded 3.0 TFL and 1.0 sack while making his first career start. He is the second player this fall to post at least 3.0 TFL in a game, as junior
London Cloud tallied 3.5 TFL in the season-opener at Ohio Dominican. Brown was a two-time, first-team all-conference defensive lineman and placed among the top-five twice at the PIAA Wrestling Championships while at West Mifflin.
• The Vulcans are tied for third in the country this season in third-down conversion percentage, having converted 60 percent (27-of-45) on third downs. Last week, Cal U converted 13-of-17 on third down, which mark the most third-down conversions in recent program history (since 2002). The Vulcans have converted at least six third downs in each game this year, plus are a combined three-for-six on fourth downs.
• Sophomore
Brian Alsobrooks has served as the team's kicker and kickoff specialist in the opening weeks of the season. Last week, he converted a 32-yard field goal, attempted eight PAT attempts (six made) and tallied a pair of punts against Shippensburg. Alsobrooks is the first player since
Cody Nuzzo in the 2011 season (Weeks 1-3) to handle all three roles of kicking in a game.
