ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 12) – Following a 300-plus mile trip to The Empire State, the Vulcans posted a 1-1 double overtime draw at Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday night in non-conference action.
With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team moves to 1-0-2 overall after being idle for over a week. Meanwhile, the Redhawks move to 2-1-2 this season.
Freshman
Conner Griest (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) opened the contest with the first shot on goal that was safely blocked down by the Roberts Wesleyan goalie at the 5:05-mark of the first half. The Redhawks responded with an offensive attack in the 10th minute and junior goalkeeper
Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) forced the ball over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless. Cal U countered with a pair of shots on goal before the Redhawks scored the initial goal of the game on a shot into the lower left corner from Johanz Tusiime at the 12:56-mark to take an early 1-0 lead. Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) scored his first goal of the season on a back-heel kick with an assist recorded by freshman
Paul Young, Jr. (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's), who sent the free kick into the box. Roberts Wesleyan had a few chances before halftime, but Valeriano came up with a pair of saves to keep the contest tied at 1-1 heading into the break.
Young attempted to break the tie early in the second half, but saw a pair of shots blocked by the Redhawk defense. In the 63rd minute, Valeriano had a knock-down save to keep the match tied and end the Roberts Wesleyan attack. Griest saw a scoring chance go wide of the net before neither team attempted a shot for nearly 14 minutes. Cal U was forced to play with 10-men after freshman
Antone Perry (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) was shown a red card at the 80:59-mark. The Redhawks put pressure on once again late in the second half, but were unable to score and the game went to overtime.
Both teams saw limited chances in the initial overtime period before the Redhawks managed three shots in just over a minute in the second overtime. The Vulcans blocked a pair of attempts and saw a header go wide of the goal.
Valeriano earned the start in his season debut and tallied seven saves on 19 shots over 110 minutes of play.
Roberts Wesleyan held a 19-13 shot advantage and posted a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they travel to face Wheeling Jesuit at 1 p.m.
