MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 1) – The Vulcans tied the score early in the second half on Saturday afternoon before opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play with a 3-1 loss at Millersville.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 1-1 this season with a 0-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Millersville improves to 2-0 overall after scoring a combined nine goals in their initial two contests.
The Marauders applied pressure with three shots and an offside in the opening five-plus minutes of the game. Millersville then took a 1-0 lead at the 7:51-mark when Talia Grynkewicz placed a feed from Rachel Leisher into the right side of the net. The Marauders continued the pressure throughout the first half with 16 shots, including eight on goal.
Cal U tied the score at 1-1 early in the second half when sophomore
Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) tallied her first collegiate goal off a pass from classmate
Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) in the 49th minute. The Marauders later totaled three shots and two corner kicks in a two-minute span midway through the second half. Millersville managed to reclaim the lead at 2-1 in the 75th minute on a goal by Leisher off an assist from Grynkewicz. Millersville added an insurance goal less than 10 minutes later when Kay Liebi recorded her third goal of the season.
Sophomore
Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) posted seven saves while making her second career start. Junior
Reilly McGlumphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) played the entire second half on Saturday and made a pair of saves.
Millersville finished the game with a 29-3 shot advantage, including 12 attempts on goal, and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they host Pitt-Johnstown at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, starting at 6 p.m.
