Vulcans power way to split at PFX Spring Games

Robblee tallies five RBI, four runs scored against Quincy before recording 10 strikeouts vs UIndy

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team belted five homers, including two by junior Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue), in a 13-1 run-rule victory over Post (Conn.) on Wednesday before suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 20 UIndy at the PFX Spring Games.

With the split, the Vulcans move to 5-7 this season behind a 4-4 record while in Florida.

Against Post (1-7), Cal U recorded its most homers in a game since the 2015 season. Robblee posted her first career multi-homer game, finishing 3-for-5 with two homers, five RBI and four runs scored while serving as the designated player. Senior third baseman Carlee Wickstrom (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, three RBI and two runs scored, while senior center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) and sophomore first baseman Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) both belted a homer against the Eagles.

The Vulcans took a 4-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first behind a two-run double by Robblee before Wilson followed with a two-run homer. Cal U added to its lead in the third, as Robblee started the inning with a solo homer before Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly and freshman second baseman Alexa Pastor (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) delivered an RBI single.

In the fourth, the Vulcans stretched the lead to 9-0 behind back-to-back homers by Wickstrom and Fowler to lead off the inning. Post avoided the shutout in the bottom of the inning after the leadoff batter reached base on a double. Cal U batted around in the top of the fifth, as Wickstrom tallied a two-run double and Robblee later belted a two-run homer.

Junior Emilee Downing (Groveport, Ohio/Groveport Madison) improved to 2-1 this season after yielding one run (earned) while scattering three hits and one walk over 5.0 innings. She also registered seven strikeouts while making her fourth appearance in Florida.

Against UIndy (17-4), Robblee set a career high with 10 strikeouts while making her first start in the circle since Feb. 9. She allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits and six walks over 7.0 innings. UIndy starter Lauren Honkomp earned the victory after surrendering one run (earned) on four hits and five walks in 6.2 innings.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before adding two runs in the fifth behind two singles and two walks. UIndy looked to add an insurance run in the seventh before Robblee forced the Greyhounds to leave the bases loaded. In the bottom of the inning, senior left fielder Kaylyn Roose (Akron, Ohio/Revere) reached on a walk before freshman catcher Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) later delivered a two-out RBI triple.

Wilson finished 2-for-4 with one RBI from the leadoff spot in the loss.

Cal U closes play in the PFX Spring Games tomorrow, Thursday, March 15, when it faces Bemidji State (Minn.) and Wayne State (Mich.), starting at 8:30 a.m.
