Vulcans dealt loss against Bloomsburg, 6-3

Teams combine to leave 19 runners on base; Cal U suffers first loss since opening day on Feb. 18

WILSON, N.C. (March 11) - After stranding five runners in scoring position in the contest, the Vulcans had their nine-game winning streak snapped with a 6-3 loss versus Bloomsburg on Sunday evening at Fleming Stadium.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team falls to 9-3 on the season after posting its longest winning streak since the 2013 campaign. Meanwhile, the Huskies improve to 7-3 overall while posting a 3-0 record this year against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents.

The Vulcans left a total of 10 runners on base during the nine-inning game, including five in scoring position. Cal U took an early 2-0 lead after scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Junior second baseman Nico Marchetti (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) registered a single for the first hit of the game before senior right fielder Chris Wastchak (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) record a single with two outs. After a walk loaded the bases, junior first baseman Eric Fairman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) delivered a two-run single before the Vulcans stranded two runners in the inning.

Bloomsburg responded in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 2-1 before the Vulcans ended the inning on the same play by throwing out the runner advancing to third. In the bottom half of the inning, junior center fielder Ben Maudie (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) led off with a double and moved to third on a ground-out on the following at-bat. Senior shortstop Austin Logan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) reached on a fielder's choice which didn't result in an out and stole second to move into scoring position before back-to-back outs left the runners on base. Cal U was held hitless in the third inning, but stranded two runners on base before the Huskies took the lead on a two-run single,3-2.

The Vulcans went three-up, three-down the bottom of the fourth while Bloomsburg extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth with an RBI single. Cal U countered in the sixth inning to cut the deficit 4-3 after opening the inning with a double from redshirt freshman left fielder Bill Hitman (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II). A pinch-hit single by redshirt senior Bobby Thompson (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville) advanced the runner to third before a sacrifice fly from Logan drove in the runner to make it a one-run game. The Huskies answered in the seventh with two runs on an RBI double and sacrifice fly to take a 6-3 lead.

Sophomore Nick Riggle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) moved to 1-1 this season after being saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks in 5.0 innings. Classmate Bradyn Kail (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) closed out the game with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, recording three strikeouts and surrendering just one hit. Bloomsburg sophomore JJ Spehrley improved to 3-0 this season after working 2.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts, while senior Mike Warren recorded the save after tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Maudie went 2-for-4 while making his fourth start of the season, while Fairman finished with two RBI.

Due to rain in the forecast, Cal U has reschedule its contest with Kutztown to Tuesday, March 13, at Fleming Stadium in North Carolina. The Vulcans and Golden Bears were originally set to play Monday, March 12, but adjusted the game due to weather.
