Vulcans fall to Quincy, Northwood in Florida

Wickstrom records five RBI; Cal U falls to Quincy on walk-off solo homer in the eighth inning

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 10) – The Vulcans suffered a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon while opening play in Florida at the PFX Spring Games, dropping a 7-6 contest to Quincy (Ill.) in extra innings before falling by a score of 8-3 against Northwood (Mich.).

With the losses, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team drops to 1-5 on the season after returning to action for the first time in nearly a month.

Against Quincy (8-5), the Vulcans took a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth before the Hawks claimed a 7-6 walk-off victory on a homer by catcher Remi Ferguson. Junior Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (three earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings of relief. Quincy starter Sara Demuth earned the complete-game victory, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits and three walks in 8.0 innings.

Cal U raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first behind a solo homer by senior shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and a two-run homer by senior left fielder Carlee Wickstrom (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township). The Hawks answered with one run in the bottom of the inning before the Vulcans countered with an RBI single by freshman right fielder Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny). Quincy cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third on a two-run homer by left fielder Morgan Heckman before the Hawks tied the score in the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, sophomore Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) led off with a double before Wickstrom followed with a go-ahead RBI single. Quincy tied the score on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to force the contest to extra innings, utilizing the international tiebreaker. The Vulcans took a 6-5 lead in the eighth on an RBI single by Robblee before the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning, eventually claiming the win on a solo homer by Ferguson.

Brooke Wilson went 3-for-5 with one RBI from the leadoff spot, while Wickstrom finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Against Northwood (3-2), the Vulcans surrendered six runs with two outs and allowed 12 hits in the contest. The Timberwolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run homer by first baseman Torriya Gray-Baker before the Vulcans responded with three runs in the bottom half. Brooke Wilson led off with a single and Paige Wilson later drew a walk. Wickstrom then delivered a two-run triple before scoring on a throwing error to give the Vulcans a 3-2 lead.

Northwood reclaimed the lead in the second with a pair of runs after opening the inning with three-straight singles. The Timberwolves later extended the lead to 7-3 after scoring three runs with two outs in the top of the fourth. Northwood added an insurance run in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-3.

Junior Emilee Downing (Groveport, Ohio/Groveport Madison) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. Northwood freshman Shayna Frank earned the complete-game victory, surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits over 7.0 innings.

The Vulcans return to action at the PFX Spring Games tomorrow, Sunday, March 11, when they face New York Institute of Technology and Clarion, starting at 9 a.m.
