WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 6) – After yielding two goals in the opening 10 minutes, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss at West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 1-6-3 this season with a 0-6 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams improve to 7-2-2 overall behind a 4-1-1 record in conference play.
Both teams came out physical in the first half with four fouls whistled in the opening five-plus minutes. West Chester got on the board with the initial goal of the contest by sophomore Stephen Thompson on a long ball played into the box from senior Nicholas Meola to take a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Just 71 seconds later, the Golden Rams extended their advantage to 2-0 on a goal off the post from junior Brett Miller with an assist recorded by sophomore Doug Goitia. Dylan Zupanc (Erie, Pa./Iroquois), but it was saved by the West Chester goalkeeper. The Golden Rams continued to apply pressure to the Vulcan defense with four shots and two corner kick in an 11-minute span. Cal U registered a few scoring chances later in the half with a shot blocked before the West Chester goalie recorded a save. The Golden Rams took a 2-0 lead at the break, while also holding an 11-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half, West Chester added to its lead in the 50th minute on a goal by redshirt junior Nick Jachwak with Goitia tallying another assist after crossing the ball into the box, 3-0. The Golden Rams offense continued the offensive push with three shots and two corner kicks, but the Vulcan defense was able to clear the chances. West Chester registered an insurance goal at the 69:58-mark on a goal from sophomore Daniel Grindrod with assists tallied by Thompson and freshman Austin Eveland to take a 4-0 advantage. The Vulcans were held to just two shots the remainder of the half, as the Golden Rams secured the victory.
Senior
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) recorded four saves on 19 shots faced while playing all 90 minutes of action.
The Golden Rams posted a 19-6 shot advantage, including an 8-2 lead in shots of goal, and also notched a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to PSAC action on Friday, Oct. 12, when it hosts Shippensburg at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, starting at 6:30 p.m.
