CALIFORNIA (Oct. 24) – The Vulcans cut the deficit to one goal in the 48th minute on Wednesday night before suffering a 3-1 loss against Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 1-13-2 overall with a 0-13-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights improve to 8-6-2 this season behind a 7-6-2 record in conference action.
Gannon pressured the net with eight shots in the opening portion of the contest with junior
Reilly McGlumphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) recording four saves. The Lady Knights later took a 1-0 lead at the 27:30-mark when Taylor Lewis scored on a header off a corner kick by Maddie North. Lewis added another goal in the 32nd minute when she placed a shot into the top right corner. Gannon took a 2-0 lead into the break after attempting 11 shots in the first half.
The Vulcans trimmed the deficit to 2-1 at the 47:29-mark when senior
Julia Darminio (Sykesville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) scored her second goal of the season off a cross into the box from freshman
Maraye Alexander (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills). Gannon looked to respond by placing a pair of shots on net within five minutes before sophomore
Kayla Morran (Danville, Pa./Danville) made a pair of saves. Cal U nearly tied the score in the 68th minute when a shot by sophomore
Carilyn Pasierb (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) hit off the crossbar. Morran later made three saves in the final 15 minutes before the Lady Knights added an insurance goal at the 88:11-mark when Vanessa Coccurello scored off a corner kick.
McGlumphy tallied five saves while playing the entire first half on Saturday. Morran, who was making only her second appearance of the season, also registered five saves against Gannon while playing the entire second half.
Gannon attempted 11 shots in each half and finished with a 22-6 shot advantage. The Lady Knights also posted a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans close out the season on Saturday, Oct. 27, when they host Lock Haven for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
