Vulcans record sweep over Millersville, 3-0

van Schaik matches career high of 22 kills; Priore tallies eighth kill/dig double-double this year

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 19) – Senior Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) matches career high with 22 kills on Friday night, as the Vulcans secured a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 26-24, 25-23) against Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the Convocation Center.
 
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 15-9 this season behind an 8-4 record in league action and remains tied for first place in the Southwest Division standings. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 11-10 overall with a 6-6 mark in conference play.
 
van Schaik led all players and matched a career high with 22 kills on a .413 hitting percentage and added six digs. Junior Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) tallied her eighth kill/dig double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, while freshman Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) post nine kills and 15 digs versus Millersville. Freshman Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) guided the offense with 43 assists and added nine digs in the victory.
 
Sophomore Jensen Silbaugh  (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) anchored the defense with 18 digs, while freshman Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) recorded 16 digs. Moehring and Priore also registered double-digit digs on Friday.
 
Cal U built a 6-1 lead in the first set after a pair of kills from senior Tina Bellhy (McDonald,Pa./Fort Cherry). Following a timeout, the Marauders closed the gap with three-straight points before the Vulcans scored four-unanswered points, 10-4. The teams exchanged the next eight points before Millersville tallied back-to-back points to trim the deficit to 14-10. Cal U recorded three-straight points before the Marauders registered a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 19-15. Millersville trimmed the deficit to 20-17 before the Vulcans scored five of the next seven points to claim the first set, 25-19.
 
The Vulcans posted a .327 hitting percentage with 17 kills to take the second set by a 26-24 count. The Marauders established a 6-1 lead before forcing Cal U to take an early timeout. The Vulcans responded with a 5-2 run to close the gap to 8-6 before tying the match at 9-9 after back-to-back kills. Both teams battled for the lead before Millersville tallied four-straight points to take a 21-18 advantage. Following a Cal U timeout, the Vulcans scored five of the next seven points to tie the match at 23-23. Cal U used a 3-1 run to take the second set by a 26-24 margin.
 
Cal U completed the sweep with a 25-23 victory in the third set. The Vulcans took an 8-3 advantage before the Marauders cut the deficit by winning five of the next seven points, 10-8. Millersville tied the contest at 15-15 before taking the lead on an attacking error. Following a Vulcan timeout, both teams would tie the match five more times before Cal U scored three of the next four points to seal the match victory, 25-23.
 
Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 20, as it hosts West Chester at the Convocation Center in PSAC Crossover play, starting at 1 p.m.
