Cal U drops league contest at Clarion, 1-0

Both teams finish with three shots on goal, three corner kicks

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team surrendered the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute on Wednesday night in a 1-0 loss at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 1-12-2 this season behind a 0-12-2 record in conference action. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 3-11-1 overall with a 2-11 mark in league play.

Clarion nearly took the lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game with a shot that hit the crossbar before another attempt less than 10 seconds later missed wide of the net. The Vulcans then threatened the net with a pair of corner kicks and two shots attempts in a span of two minutes. In the 29th minute, Clarion placed a shot on goal and registered a corner kick before Cal U was able to clear the ball from the defensive end. The teams entered halftime scoreless with the Golden Eagles hold a 6-4 edge in shots.

In the opening six minutes of the second half, the Golden Eagles again hit the crossbar before Rachel Giannangeli scored at the 52:04-mark off a feed from Dani McNally. Cal U looked to counter with a shot on goal just over two minutes later and eventually attempted two additional shots before the 60th minute. The teams then battled for possession for over 10 minutes, as neither team attempted a shot until the 73:57-mark. The Vulcans were unable to place a shot on target for the remainder of the game.

Sophomore Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) posted two saves on Wednesday night.

Clarion finished with a 10-8 shot advantage with each team collecting four shots in the second period. Both teams also registered three corner kicks in the contest.

The Vulcans are idle for a week before returning to action on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when they host Gannon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, beginning at 6 p.m.
