INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 13) – Despite three players recording kill/dig double-doubles, the Vulcans suffered a 3-2 loss (23-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 17-15) at IUP on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southwest action.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team fell to 14-9 overall with a 7-4 mark in league play. The Vulcans remain in a three-way tie in the Southwest Division standings. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks improve to 7-17 this season behind a 3-8 record in conference play.
Senior
Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) set a career high with 22 kills and added 13 digs to record her first kill/dig double-double of the season. Freshman
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) recorded a kill/dig double-double, her 10th of the year, with a season-high 17 kills and 17 digs. Junior
Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) tallied her seventh kill/dig double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs versus the Crimson Hawks. Freshmen
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense with a season-high 53 assists and added 12 digs for her eighth assist/dig double-double of the year.
Sophomore
Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) totaled 19 digs, while Moehring and van Schaik totaled 17 and 13 digs, respectively. Freshman
Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) registered 13 digs. Priore and Benson both tallied 12 digs in the contest. The defensive effort at the net was led by van Schaik and senior

In the first set, the Vulcans established a 6-4 lead before the Crimson Hawks scored three of the next four points to tie the match at 7-7. Cal U responded with three-unanswered points before extending the lead to 13-9. Following a Cal U timeout, IUP closed the gap to 14-13, but the Vulcans countered with three of the next four points to remain ahead 17-14. The Crimson Hawks responded with a 7-2 run to take a 21-19 advantage before back-to-back kills by van Schaik tied the contest at 21-21. The Vulcans tallied four of the next six points to claim the first set by a 25-23 count.
IUP opened the second set with a 5-3 advantage before Cal U recorded kills by van Schaik and Moehring to tie the contest, 5-5. The Crimson Hawks regained the lead after tallying five of the next eight points to take a 10-8 lead. The Vulcans responded with three-straight points before IUP countered with three-unanswered points to hold a 13-12 advantage. Cal U claimed the lead with a 4-1 run before the Crimson Hawks tied the match at 17-17. Both teams traded the next six points, as the Vulcans held a 21-20 lead. Cal U scored four of the next seven points to take the second set by a 25-23 margin.
IUP took a 6-4 lead to start the third set before Cal U countered with three-straight points to claim a 7-6 lead. The Crimson Hawks scored five of the next eight points to establish an 11-10 advantage before the Vulcans were forced to take a timeout. IUP used a 6-1 run to take a 17-11 lead before Cal U recorded three-unanswered points to trim the deficit to 17-14. The Crimson scored four of the next five points to take a 21-15 advantage before a 3-2 run sealed the third set for IUP by a 25-17 count.
The Crimson Hawks posted a .231 hitting percentage and 14 kills to take the fourth set, 25-18. IUP took a 7-4 lead before both teams traded the next four points. Following a Cal U timeout, IUP recorded three-straight points before the Vulcans used a 5-0 run to trim the deficit to 12-11. The Crimson Hawks countered with four-unanswered points before scoring four of the next six points to extend the lead to 20-13. The Vulcans posted three-straight points, but IUP responded with a 4-0 run to take a 24-16 advantage. Cal U scored back-to-back points before the Crimson Hawks closed out the fourth set, 25-18.
IUP completed the comeback victory with a 17-15 win in a decisive fifth set. Both teams traded points early in the set, as the match was tied at 5-5. The Crimson Hawks recorded three-straight points to take an 8-5 advantage before the Vulcans tallied three-unanswered points, 9-8. IUP scored three of the next five before Cal U claimed the lead at 14-12 after a 3-0 run. The Crimson Hawks countered with a 5-1 run to secure the fifth set, 17-15.
The Vulcans return to PSAC Crossover action on Friday, Oct. 19, as they host Millersville at the Convocation Center, starting at 6 p.m.
