CALIFORNIA (Oct. 12) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team evened the score in 37th minute on Friday evening before finishing with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the result, the Vulcans move to 1-10-2 this season with a 0-10-2 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Raiders stand at 6-6-1 overall behind a 5-6-1 mark in PSAC play.
Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when KK O'Donnell took advantage of a rebound with an unassisted goal, her third of the year. The Vulcans attempted to counter with a shot on net at the 31:32-mark by sophomore
Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) that was saved by the Shippensburg goalkeeper. Cal U eventually responded in the 37th minute when freshman
Rebecca Lyxell (Stockholm, Sweden/Norra Real) directed a free kick from sophomore
Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) into the net for her second career goal. The teams remained tied at the break after each team placed four shots on goal.
The Vulcans applied early pressure on the net after halftime, tallying a pair of shots in the opening five minutes of the second half. The game became more physical midway through the half with each team being issued a yellow card. With 16:30 left in regulation, Cal U was forced to change goalkeepers due to an injury to starter
Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon). Cal U threatened to break the tie in the 84th minute with three shots from inside the box in a span of 11 seconds. In the closing seconds, the Raiders played a corner kick into the box that was caught out of midair by sophomore goalkeeper
Kayla Morran (Danville, Pa./Danville), who made her debut with the program on Friday, to force overtime.
In the initial overtime, Cal U threatened with a corner kick and a shot attempt in the opening minute. Lyxell later placed a shot on net in the 93rd minute that was saved by the Raider goalkeeper. O'Donnell nearly ended the game at the 94:50-mark with a shot deflecting off the post. The Raiders later played two corner kicks in the closing minutes before a shot in the final seconds missed right of the net.
Both teams placed a shot on target in the opening two-plus minutes of the second overtime. Freshman
Hannah Burgess (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) had a shot hit off the crossbar in the 107th minute before the Raiders later attempted two shots in the final minute.
Sinatra finished with five saves and yielded one goal in 73-plus minutes before being forced from the game. Morran earned the tie after tallying two saves in her season debut.
The Raiders held a slight 17-14 shot advantage behind a combined seven shots in the overtime periods. Shippensburg also finished with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 14, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 2 p.m.
