Vulcans fall short in OT at Seton Hill, 90-87

Griffins made a three-pointer with one-second remaining; Teckle scores season-high 27 points

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 13) – Despite a season-high 27 points by senior forward Robel Teckle (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy), the Vulcans fell 90-87 on a last-second three-pointer at Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action. 

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team drops to 8-9 overall behind a 4-7 mark in league action after playing in its second overtime game in six days. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 6-10 this season behind a 3-8 record in conference play. 

Teckle finished with 27 points after shooting 10-of-14 from the field, including 7-of-10 from long range. He added eight rebounds and six assists while playing 40 minutes on Saturday. Teckle has scored in double-digits in four of the last five games and becomes the third Cal U player with seven three-pointers in a game in past two years. 

Junior Jahmere Howze (Cleveland, Ohio/Warrensville Heights) posted 20 points on 7-of-13 attempts and converted five-of-seven from the free-throw line. He has now notched back-to-back 20-point games for the second time this season and ranks third on the team in scoring with 17.0 points per game. Senior Isaiah Lewis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) tallied 19 points and two assists while playing 37 minutes against the Griffins. Teammate Cordell Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) totaled 12 points on four-of-eight from the floor and added six rebounds, seven assists and five steals on Saturday afternoon. 

In overtime, Seton Hill took the early advantage on a jumper before Teckle responded with a layup to tie the game at 85-85. Both teams were held scoreless over a two-minute stretch until a pair of layups tied the contest with under one minute left. The Griffins knocked down a shot from beyond the arc with one second left to secure a 90-87 victory.

Cal U started the contest with a three-pointer by Teckle before getting out to an early 13-8 lead with 13:23 remaining in the half. The Vulcans extended their advantage following a pair of layups until the Griffins responded with a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 19-17. Seton Hill claimed its first lead of the game following back-to-back three-pointers before surrendering the lead back to Cal U after a layup by Howze. The Vulcans extended the lead on a pair of three-pointers by Teckle to take a 33-28 advantage with 4:18 left in the first half. Seton Hill scored eight-unanswered points to recapture the lead before Cal U tied the contest at 36-36 after Howze made a three-pointer. The Griffins countered with two late layups to take a 40-39 advantage into the break. 

Both teams traded baskets in the initial two minutes of the second half before Cal U scored seven-straight points to take a 50-44 lead with 16:25 remaining. Lewis nailed a three-pointer to put the Vulcans ahead 61-51 until the Griffins closed the gap with a short 5-0 run. Cal U remained in command over the next five-plus minutes, leading by as many as 11 points. Seton Hill countered with a 13-2 rally to tie the contest at 79-79 with 1:42 left. During the run, the Griffins made three-of-six from the field and converted five-of-five from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Vulcans were forced into three turnovers and held to one field goal. Lewis made two jumpers in the last 78 seconds, but a pair of putbacks by Seton Hill sent the game to overtime tied at 83-83. 

The Vulcans finished the contest with a .478 shooting percentage (32-of-67) and converted 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, the Griffins shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) from the floor and made 11-of-22 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Seton Hill held a sizeable 44-32 rebounding advantage, while Cal U forced 18 turnovers and tallied 21 assists. 

Junior guard Trevor Blondin posted career-high 32 points on 10-of-23 shooting and made 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. He added seven rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. Classmate Tommy Sekunda finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 attempts and collected two rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes off the bench. Junior Trevor Lecuona tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists in 29 minutes, while teammate Spencer Casson posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17, when it hosts IUP in the Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m.
