GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 24) – The Vulcans suffered a 2-0 loss at Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the loss, California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 1-6-1 on the season with a 1-5-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Griffiths move to 6-2-1 overall behind a 4-2-1 record in conference play.
The Vulcan offense was on the attack in the early minutes of the match when sophomore
Holly Jacobson (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) recorded the first shot of the game that went high over the net. Seton Hill responded in the 14th minute when freshman Syaani Harris beat her defender and scored to give the Griffins the initial advantage. Cal U registered its best chance in the first half when freshman
Carilyn Pasierb (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had her shot goal saved by the Seton Hill goalie. Just about five minutes later, the Griffins executed a give-and-go at the top of the box and junior Emily Lopresti notched the second goal of the contest in the 27th minute. Seton Hill took a 2-0 lead into halftime with a 5-2 advantage in shots, while both teams recorded one corner kick.
The Griffins came out of the half looking to add to their lead when a shot by sophomore Katie Kimmich was saved by senior goalkeeper
Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg). At the 61:26-mark, freshman
Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) registered a shot that went wide left of the net as Cal U tried to chip into the Seton Hill lead. The Vulcan defense was tested with 11 shots as the Griffins controlled possession throughout the second half. Pasierb recorded a shot in the 84th minute off a corner kick that drifted over the top of the goal.
Colon tallied six saves in the match, including four in the second half while playing the full 90 minutes.
Seton Hill out-shot Cal U by a 16-4 margin, including 11 shots in the second half, and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to PSAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when they host IUP at 7 p.m.
