Vulcans play to tie with Millersville, 2-2

Cal U forces OT with 'own goal' in 82nd minute; Ross records first career goal

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 2) – The Vulcans battled Millersville to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Saturday afternoon at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 0-1-1 overall with a 0-0-1 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Marauders stand at 1-0-1 this year and also sit at 0-0-1 in conference play.

Freshman Zana Ross (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) wasted little time in the home-opener, as she recorded her first career goal in the 4th minute off a cross from senior Francesca Scenna (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) to get out an early 1-0 advantage. Millersville attempted to respond in the first half with three scoring chances in four minutes, but all were saved by senior goalkeeper Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg). The Vulcans remained ahead at the end of the half.

The Marauders leveled the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Delaney Meadows received the ball in the box and chipped it over the goalie's out-stretched hands. Millersville remained in control of the ball for most of the second half and took the lead in the 82nd minute when Talia Grynkewicz fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net. Just moments later, Cal U pushed the ball forward and tied the game on an 'own goal' after a cross into the box deflected off a Millersville defender into the back of the net. The game went into overtime as neither team could break the tie in regulation.

Colon set a career high with nine saves, including four in the first overtime period. The best opportunity for the Marauders came from Kay Leebi, whose shot went off the post in the closing minutes of the second overtime.

Millersville finished the contest with a 23-4 advantage in shots and held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown at 4 p.m.
