Cal U posts shutout at Pitt-Johnstown, 1-0

Colon registers first career shutout; Austin scores first collegiate goal

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 6) – Freshman Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) scored the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute on Wednesday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 1-1-1 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats suffer their first loss of the season and drop to 1-1-1 behind a 0-1-1 record in the conference action.

The Vulcan defense was tested early in the game, as Pitt-Johnstown attempted six shots in the opening 20 minutes. Cal U put together an attack in the 23rd minute with freshman Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) recording the first shot on goal for the visiting side, which was saved by the goalkeeper. The Vulcans capitalized later in the half on a corner kick from senior Daniela Dell'Aquila (Toronto, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic), which was put in the goal off the head of Austin, as she recorded her first career goal.

Cal U recorded three shots on goal coming out of halftime, as it looked to add an insurance goal against the Mountain Cats. Senior goalkeeper Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) came up with four saves in the second half to hold Pitt-Johnstown scoreless for the first time this year.

Colon registered the first shutout of her career after recording five saves on 17 shots. The Vulcans last recorded a shutout and conference win on Oct. 11 last season in a 1-0 victory over Mercyhurst.

Cal U held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, while Pitt-Johnstown posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans continue conference play on Saturday, Sept. 9, when it travels to face Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
