Vulcans earn doubleheader split at Seton Hill

Price, Roose collect three hits in Game 2; Davis works 8.1 innings of relief

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 8) – The Vulcans managed a doubleheader split on the road against Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 1-0 loss in extra innings in Game 1 before posting a 5-2 victory in Game 2.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team moved to 10-10 overall with a 1-3 mark in divisional action. Meanwhile, the Griffins stand at 9-16 this season behind an 2-4 record in league play.

In Game 1, Seton Hill claimed the victory with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to break the scoreless tie. The Vulcans were limited to just three hits in the contest and were shutout for the third-straight contest. Sophomore starter Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) allowed only one hit and two walks in 4.0 shutout innings (61 pitches). Senior Kaity Davis (Massilon, Ohio/Jackson) suffered the loss after yielding one run (earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief (49 pitches). Seton Hill starter Amanda Huff tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and tossed 94 pitches over 8.0 innings.

Cal U stranded two runners in the top of the first before Seton Hill also threatened in the bottom of the inning with Robblee inducing a ground-out with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Griffins nearly broke the tie in the fifth on a single before freshman Allison Kapoll was thrown out at the plate. The Vulcans threatened in the top of the seventh by having runners on first and second before two ground-outs ended the inning. Junior Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) opened the top of the eighth with a double before three-straight fly-outs kept the game scoreless.

In Game 2, the Vulcans scored four runs in the top of the second before finishing with a 5-2 win. Price went 3-of-4 with one RBI and junior catcher Kaylyn Roose (Akron, Ohio/Revere) finished 3-of-3 with one run scored. Junior first baseman Alissa Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville) went 2-of-3 with a solo homer and scored two runs.

Cal U tallied four runs in the top of the second after collecting four hits. Petrosoniak started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Roose. After a walk loaded the bases, junior right fielder Courtney Sinclair (Oil City, Ontario/Lambton Central) delivered a two-run single to left field. The Vulcans again loaded the bases before Price collected an RBI single and junior center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) followed with a sacrifice fly. The Griffins scored one run in the bottom half of the second before the Vulcans responded with a run on the fifth behind a solo homer by Petrosniak, her first of the year. Seton Hill later countered with one run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out double.

Davis improved to 4-4 this season after yielding one run (earned) on three hits with no walks in 5.1 innings of relief (59 pitches). Huff (6-6) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits and one walks while working just 1.0 inning in the start.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 9, when it hosts a doubleheader against Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
