INDIANA, Pa. (April 28) – The Vulcans were swept in a doubleheader at IUP on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, suffering a 10-7 loss in Game 1 and a 7-3 loss in Game 2.
With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team drop to 19-23 this season with a 10-11 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks improve to 20-13 overall behind an 11-9 mark in divisional play.
In Game 1, IUP scored all 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning and held on for the 10-7 win. Junior third baseman
Andrew Grace (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Senior first baseman
David Marcus (Whitby,Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) also went 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored, while junior right fielder
Chris Wastchak (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) tallied two hits, one RBI and two runs scored in the loss.
Cal U took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double from Marcus and a two-out RBI single from sophomore catcher
Kristian Webb (Whitby,Onatrio/Sinclair). After leaving two runners on in the first, the Crimson Hawks struck for 10 runs on nine hits and three walks in the bottom of the second to take a 10-2 lead. IUP batted around in the second after the initial batter was retired on a ground-out before Cal U was forced to use three pitchers in the inning. Grace helped the Vulcans cut into the deficit in the top of the third by recording a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded. Cal U later scored two more runs in the top of fifth after Wastchak recorded an RBI double and Grace followed with another two-out RBI. The Vulcans threatened in the top of the seventh as they brought the tying run to the plate with two outs before a fly-out ended the game.
Senior starter
Andre Jones (New Castle, Pa./Union) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks in just 1.1 innings. Freshman
Bradyn Kail (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief after taking over in the bottom of the second, scattering two hits and recording four strikeouts. IUP starter Jeff Allen earned the win after going 5.0 innings and yielding six runs (all earned) on seven hits
In Game 2, Cal U once again took an initial 2-0 lead in the top of the first before allowing four runs in the second and three in the fourth, 7-3. Sophomore left fielder
Eric Fairman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led off the game with a walk and stole second before Marcus recorded an RBI single. Grace then recorded another two-out RBI with a single to score Marcus. The Crimson Hawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with four runs on two hits, three walks and one error. IUP added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs, including two with two outs. Cal U was unable to have a runner move into scoring position until the top of the sixth when it scored a run on a two-out RBI single from senior catcher

Junior
Carter Krick (Lancaster,Pa./Manheim Township) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks. Freshman
Anthony Winkler (South Park, Pa./South Park) provided 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in the loss.
Grace tallied his second multi-hit game of the afternoon, going 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI. Yourgal also tallied two hits and one RBI.
Cal U continues its series with IUP tomorrow, Saturday, April 29, with a home doubleheader in Washington, Pennsylvania, at 1 p.m.
