CALIFORNIA (April 26) – Junior first baseman
Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) delivered a two-run, walk-off homer in the eighth inning of Game 2 on Wednesday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania softball team swept a doubleheader against Edinboro at Lilley Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 19-13 this season with a 10-6 mark in divisional action. Cal U is now tied for second in the PSAC West standings with four games left in the regular season and sits just one game back of first place. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots drops to 13-20 overall behind a 4-12 record in league play.
In Game 2, Cal U rallied from a 6-0 deficit to force extra innings by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Fighting Scots threatened in the eighth, as the first batter of the inning reached on a fielding error before a sacrifice bunt with one out advanced the runner into scoring position. Sophomore reliever
Carly Konopka (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) then caught a line drive that potentially would have scored the go-ahead run from second. In the bottom of the inning, junior shortstop
Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Wilson then belted a two-run homer, her first of the year and the first in 143 at-bats dating back to last April – also against Edinboro.
Wilson finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while junior center fielder
Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one walk. Senior right fielder
Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) posted a pair of hits and RBI and sophomore
Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) also collected two hits in the win. Price scored two runs from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Konopka (1-1) earned the win after working a season-high 5.0 innings (60 pitches) of scoreless relief. She scattered three hits and recorded six strikeouts with no walks while making just her fourth appearance in the last 28 games. Edinboro reliever Kalet Lenart (5-7) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Edinboro took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first before scoring four runs in the second after Cal U committed a pair of errors in the inning. The Fighting Scots took a 6-0 lead on a solo homer by third baseman Victoria Allocco in the top of the fourth before the Vulcans collected three-straight hits in the bottom of the inning, including an RBI infield single by Finley. Cal U cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth after scoring on an RBI single by Finley and a bases-loaded fielder's choice.
The Vulcans stranded a runner on third in the sixth before tying the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh. The inning started with three-straight singles before Lenart induced a foul-out near the first-base dugout. Finley then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Wilson to score with Cal U then having runners on first and second. Both runners advanced into scoring position on an illegal pitch before sophomore left fielder
Logan Blake (Jordan Station, Ontario/Bishop Ridley) reached on an infield single that scored Fowler. With runners on the corners and two outs, Blake stole second and a throwing error on the play allowed Finley to score from third to tie the game.
In Game 1, senior
Portia McBride (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) improved to 7-3 this season after yielding one run (earned) on five hits in 5.1 innings (94 pitches). She also tallied nine strikeouts without issuing a walk in the start. Classmate
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) recorded the save after working 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Lenart suffered the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings (83 pitches).
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Fowler scored from second on hit-and-run single by Finley. Edinboro tied the score in the fifth on three-straight hits before Cal U reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer by Price, her third of the year. The Fighting Scots threatened in the sixth with runners on second and third with only one out. Davis then entered the circle and retired the next two batters in order to end the inning.
Price went 2-for-3 while posting her 14th career homer. Senior designated player
Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) added a pair of hits in the victory.
Cal U continues its homestand on Friday, April 28, when it plays a doubleheader against PSAC West-leading Gannon at Lilley Field, starting at 2:30 p.m.
