WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 1) – The Vulcans were shutout in both games against Clarion on Saturday while playing a rare night doubleheader at home, losing 4-0 in Game 1 before suffering a 3-0 loss in Game 2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the losses, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team fall to 8-10 this season with a 4-2 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 6-11 overall behind a 2-4 mark in league action.
In Game 1, junior
Carter Krick (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits over 6.0 innings (93 pitches). Senior
Caleb Catherine (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) tossed a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout. Clarion starter Kane McCall (1-1) tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and walked four over 7.0 innings (93 pitches).
Clarion led off the game with a walk before first baseman Tyler Falk followed with an RBI double during the next at-bat. Falk later scored on a single before Krick recorded the last two outs of the inning. The Vulcans put two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the first, but could not sustain the rally with a pop-up in the following at-bat. The Golden Eagles stretched the lead in the top of the fourth after starting the inning with back-to-back doubles and executed a squeeze play two batters later to extend their lead to 4-0. The Vulcans put runners on base in the last four innings, but only had one advance into scoring position.
In Game 2, Clarion scored again in the first inning on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Junior right fielder
Chris Wastchak (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp) led off the bottom of the second with a single before being hit on a liner by sophomore left fielder
Thomas Chisam (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy). The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single following a double by Falk. Junior third baseman
Levi Krause (East Berlin, Pa./Spring Grove) recorded the team's lone extra-base hit of the doubleheader with a two-out double in the sixth before a ground-out ended the inning. The Golden Eagles tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single that landed just inside the right-field line.
Chisam reached base in all three plate appearances (two singles, walk) while making his second start of the season.
Senior
Andre Jones (New Castle, Pa./Union) took the loss after surrendering two runs (earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Clarion starter Jeremy Frazier earned the win with a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and recording seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings (98 pitches).
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, April 4, with a non-conference doubleheader versus Salem International in Washington, Pennsylvania, at 1 p.m.
