Vulcans take doubleheader split with D&E

Marcus collects four RBI in twinbill; Brooks scores three runs, steals three bases in doubleheader

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Mar. 4) – The Vulcans earned a doubleheader split against Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon with 6-5 win in Game 1 before dropping a 6-5 walk-off contest in Game 2.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team move to 2-4 this season with all six games in Washington, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, the Senators, which are members the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), stand at 2-9 overall.

In Game 1, Cal U scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings after trailing by a 4-2 score and eventually hold on for a 6-5 victory. Junior second baseman Garrett Brooks (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) reached base three times with two hits, scored three runs and stole three bases in the victory. Redshirt senior first baseman David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario, Father Leo J. Austin) and junior right fielder Chris Wastchak (Peters Twp., Pa./Peters Township) combined for four RBI, while sophomore left fielder Eric Fairman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and sophomore designated hitter Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) both collected one RBI.

Playing as the visiting team, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Marcus lined a single to score Brooks after he stole second base. Marcus picked up another RBI in the second when he drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 2-0. The Senators responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game after three of the first four batters reached in the inning and later took their first lead of the game with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. D&E scored both runs on a two-run double before a potential third run was thrown out at the plate on an 8-4-2 relay.

Cal U began its game-winning rally with two outs in the top of the fifth when Fairman doubled to left field to score Brooks after he stole third base, 4-3. Webb followed with a double to right field to tie the score at 4-4. The Vulcans took the lead in the top of the sixth when Wastchak roped a two-run single after Cal U loaded the bases. The Senators scored a run in the bottom of the sixth with two outs before the Vulcans closed the game with a scoreless seventh.

Freshman Richie Serignese (New Castle Pa./New Castle) earned the win after throwing 2.1 innings of relief, surrendering one run on three hits and with two strikeouts. D&E reliever Owen Arbogast suffered the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks in 0.2 inning pitched.

In Game 2, the Senators scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to earn the doubleheader spilt after the Vulcans scored three runs in the top of the inning. Junior shortstop Austin Logan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) belted his first home run of the season and scored two runs, while sophomore center fielder Nico Marchetti (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) collected two hits and scored two runs in the loss.

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with an RBI single by senior leftfielder Taylor Zackman (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional), and added a run in the fifth off the home run from Logan, 2-0. The Senators scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits before the Vulcans rallied in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs - all with two outs. Marcus tied the game with a two-run single and senior Danny McGrath (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) drew a pinch-hit hit by pitch to give the Vulcans a 5-4 lead. D&E tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a double before a walk-off single on the following at-bat.
