BOWIE, Md. (March 25) – Senior
Kaity Davis (Massilon, Ohio/Jackson) tossed a perfect game on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans recorded a doubleheader sweep at Bowie State with a pair of 2-0 victories in non-conference play.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 9-7 on the season while playing its first games in over a week. Meanwhile, Bowie State falls to 8-10 overall.
Davis tossed the first perfect game at Cal U in over a decade in Game 1 while also setting a career high with 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. She faced the minimum of 21 batters against the Bulldogs and registered the school's first no-hitter since April 2015. Davis, who started only one game last year, leads the team with 34 strikeouts this season while holding a 3-2 record and a 1.89 ERA.
The trio of junior first baseman
Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy), junior shortstop
Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and senior catcher
Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) each finished 2-of-3 in Game 1 with Jahoda collecting the only extra-base hit in the game.
Cal U had a scoring opportunity in the top of the second when it loaded the bases with one out after a fielder's choice and a pair of singles. However, the Vulcans were unable to score a run in the inning, as junior
Kaylyn Roose (Akron, Ohio/Revere) was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and Price grounded back to the pitcher. The Vulcans led off the third with a pair of singles before a double play and a ground-out ended the threat.
The Vulcans finally broke through in the sixth with a pair of runs with two outs. Sophomore
Emilee Downing (Groveport, Ohio/Groveport Madison) delivered a pinch-hit single to score senior
Portia McBride (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward), who entered as a pinch runner after Jahoda reached on a double. Price and Wilson collected back-to-back singles with Cal U taking a 2-0 lead on the single by Wilson.
In Game 2, McBride tossed another complete-game shutout and came within six outs of another potential perfect game. She recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed two hits over 7.0 innings. McBride also stands at 3-2 this this year with a 2.65 ERA.
Cal U opened the scoring in the first when three of the first four batters reached base on singles. Jahoda recorded an RBI single after Price and freshman third baseman
Paige Wilson (Warren Pa./Warren) reached base. The Vulcans added their final run in the top of the third after Jahoda collected her second RBI on a double to left field. Bowie State tallied its first hit of the day to start the sixth inning, but McBride retired the next three batters to close the inning. McBride yielded a single to start the seventh before retiring the last three batters of the game, including two via strikeouts.
Jahoda finished 3-of-4 with one double and two RBI in Game 2 and finished the doubleheader going a combined 5-of-7 with two doubles and two RBI.
Paige Wilson and senior
Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) each went 2-of-3 in the nightcap.
Bowie State pitcher Stefanie Ray suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Vulcans return to action on Friday, March 31, as they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play with a home doubleheader versus Slippery Rock at 3 p.m.
