No. 3 Cal U rolls past Pitt-Johnstown, 88-58

Glenn, Barrett combine for 53 points in just three quarters; Vulcans score 42 points off turnovers

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 15) – The No. 3 Vulcans allowed just seven points in the second quarter on Wednesday evening while registering an 88-58 win over Pitt-Johnstown at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
 
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 24-1 overall record and an 18-1 league mark. The Vulcans stretched their lead in the PSAC West standings to two games, as second-place IUP was idle on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Lady Cats fall to 7-19 this season behind a 3-17 record in conference play.

Senior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) paced the offense with 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor, including four-of-seven from beyond the arc. She also added three rebounds, two assists and four steals while playing just 30 minutes. Glenn has now scored at least 20 points in 11 games this year while averaging 18.8 points per game.

Junior Seairra Barrett (Center Twp.,Pa./Central Valley) added 25 points on 7-of-14 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. She also added eight rebounds (four offensive) and four steals, while senior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) collected a game-high nine rebounds along with five assists and five steals in the win.

Cal U opened the game with an 8-0 run to force a UPJ timeout with 7:32 left in the first quarter. The Lady Cats answered with a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 12-6 at the 3:06-mark before the Vulcans countered with an 11-4 rally in 2:39 to extend their lead back to 23-10 with 21 seconds left in the quarter. A jumper by Barrett started a 14-2 run that spanned nearly the opening four minutes to start the second quarter, bringing the lead to 39-15 with 6:19 left before halftime. A three-pointer from Glenn at the 1:48-mark snapped a nearly five-minute span without a field goal and started a 10-1 run by Cal U to close the half to bring the score to 47-20.

The Vulcans extended their lead to 58-22 to start the second half by continuing their run that began at the end of the first half to 16-2 over the span of three minutes. Barrett scored nine of the next 12 points over nearly five minutes to bring the lead to 71-34 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. A lay-up from Glenn to close the quarter started a string of six-unanswered points to extend the lead to 41 points, the largest of the game. With all five Cal U starters sitting out the fourth quarter, the Lady Cats out-scored the Vulcans by a 22-15 margin to end the game at 88-58.

Cal U finished the game shooting 44.6 percent (33-of-74) from the floor and 72.0 percent (18-of-25) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Lady Cats made 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the field and went 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the charity stripe. UPJ held a 44-40 rebounding advantage, while Cal U scored 42 points off 28 turnovers in the victory.

Junior Olivia McCabe and sophomore Laurel O'Barto each led the Lady Cats with 10 points and McCabe added eight rebounds in the loss.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, when it travels to face Clarion with tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
