Precious Martin (Harrisburg,Pa./Central Dauphin) and junior
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) each recorded double-doubles on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team posted a 71-62 road victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the Vulcans extend their winning streak to 12 games with a 23-1 overall record and a 17-1 conference mark. Cal U maintained its lead in the PSAC West standings, as IUP now sits second in the divisional standings with a 16-3 mark after earning a win over Edinboro on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 14-11 this season behind a 10-9 record in conference play.
Martin registered her second double-double of the season with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 9-of-17 from the floor on Saturday and has now scored in double-digits in four-straight games while tallying her first 20-point game since Nov. 16.
Parsons finished with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and a season-high 12 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. Senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored 17 points in the win (10 fourth quarter) and added four rebounds, six steals, three blocks and two assists. Sophomore
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) tallied nine points, six rebounds, a team-high four assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the 6:27-mark before the Griffins tallied five-straight points to take a 7-6 lead less than a minute later. A Sporio lay-up capped six-unanswered points for Cal U to take a 12-7 lead with 3:24 left in the first quarter. The Griffins closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 14-14 after the Vulcans missed all five of their shots from the field in that stretch. The teams traded baskets to start the second quarter before Seton Hill used another 7-2 run to take a 23-19 lead with 5:52 left in the first half. Cal U finally re-tied the game at the 2:09-mark behind a Glenn breakaway lay-up and took the lead into the break after Parsons split a pair of free-throws with three seconds left.
Seton Hill began the second half with a three-pointer to take a 34-32 lead which began a stretch where both teams were unable to build a lead more than three points for over eight minutes. A lay-up from Martin gave the Vulcans a 47-43 lead with 55 seconds left in the third quarter and they would hold a 48-47 lead entering the fourth quarter after the Griffins hit a jumper at the buzzer. Neither team held more than a two-point lead until a jumper from Martin at the 4:54-mark gave the Vulcans a 59-55 lead. Cal U eventually pulled away with a 10-3 run that spanned the next 2:32 to lead the Vulcans to the 71-62 victory. The Griffins committed a technical foul with 1:36 left after attempting to call a timeout when they were out of them.
Cal U shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the floor and made only 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Griffins posted a .442 field-goal percentage (23-of-52) and went just 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Both teams collected 39 rebounds and the Vulcans scored 42 points from inside the paint, plus 16 second-chance points. Cal U forced 25 turnovers in the victory and scored 26 points off turnovers.
Sophomore Chrisanna Green tallied a double-double with 19 points on 8-of-14 from the field and 10 rebounds off the bench. Junior Jenna Kaufman also tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Alexandria Deep finished with 11 points in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when they host Pitt-Johnstown at 5:30 p.m.
