Cushon records third double-double of the year; Vulcans feature five double-digit scorers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Nov. 29) – The No. 4 Vulcans battled through first-half foul trouble and their lowest shooting percentage of the year on Wednesday night while suffering a 93-75 loss at Ohio Dominican in non-conference play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 5-1 this year while playing its first road game in two-plus weeks. Meanwhile, the Panthers improve to 3-2 overall in their first season as members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

Junior Jiahna Flood-Francis (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Mifflin) led the team with a season-high 17 points after going four-of-seven from the floor and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line. She also collected a season-high nine rebounds (seven offensive) and added two assists and one block in 28 minutes. A transfer from Salem, Flood-Francis entered play with a combined 17 points and 10 rebounds through the opening five games of the year.

Senior Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with 16 points while shooting 6-of-14 from the floor in 19 minutes due to first-half foul trouble. Junior Mia Cushon (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive), while classmate Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) tallied 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals off the bench. ODU opened the game on a 7-2 run before Cal U scored six-straight points to take an 8-7 lead on a layup by Parsons with 6:36 left in the first quarter. Parsons was whistled for her second foul 90 seconds later and the Panthers answered with seven-consecutive points to take a 19-14 lead with 1:38 remaining in the quarter. ODU later stretched its lead to 26-19 with 8:08 left in the second quarter when Parsons reentered the game; however, she was whistled for her third foul only 11 seconds later. The Vulcans later trimmed the deficit to 30-28 on a layup by Cushon at the 5:27-mark of the quarter. The Panthers responded with an 18-4 run to close out the second quarter and take a 48-32 lead at the break. Cal U was limited to just 1-of-10 from the floor during the span, while ODU made six-of-eight from the field with a pair of three-pointers.

The teams traded points in the opening three-plus minutes of the third quarter before the Panthers scored five-straight points to extend their lead to 59-37 at the 4:23-mark. Cal U countered with a 12-6 run, as Hahn and Parsons combined for all 12 points over nearly four minutes, to cut the deficit to 65-49 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter. The Panthers eventually sealed the game with a 10-1 run in the fourth quarter, which stretched the lead to 86-62 with 4:39 left to play.
