Vulcans earn victory at Bloomsburg, 61-38

Parsons scores 1,000 career point; Cal U scores 19-unanswered points in second half

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 2) – Senior forward Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored a game-high 27 points on Saturday afternoon to reach the 1,000-point milestone, as the No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team claimed a 61-38 win at Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 6-1 this season with a 3-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 3-5 overall behind a 0-3 record in conference action.

Parsons finished with 27 points after shooting 10-of-17 from the floor and seven-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also collected 13 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season and added five blocks and four steals while playing 34 minutes. Parsons is the 28th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark, and the fifth in seven years under head coach Jess Strom, after scoring nearly 800 points the previous two seasons.

Junior Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) tallied eight points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals in 18 minutes off the bench. Classmate Jiahna Flood-Francis (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Mifflin) finished with seven points, five rebounds and two steals, while sophomore DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) posted seven points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Vulcans scored the opening six points of the game before the Huskies countered with an 11-2 run to take an 11-8 lead with 3:53 left in the first quarter. Cal U scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 13-11 lead before Bloomsburg snapped a nearly five-minute scoreless drought with a basket to tie the score at 13-13 with 8:55 remaining in the second quarter. The Vulcans responded with 11-unanswered points to take a 24-13 lead on a three-pointer by freshman Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) with 4:00 left before halftime. Bloomsburg managed to counter with seven-straight points to cut the deficit to 24-20 before Cal U took a 26-20 lead into the break.

The teams traded points for the initial six minutes of the third quarter before Cal U seized control of the game with a 19-0 run that was capped by a layup from Sporio with 7:33 left in the contest. During the rally, the Vulcans shot 8-of-10 from the floor with Parsons accounting for 10 points, while the Huskies missed all five shot attempts and committed eight turnovers. Bloomsburg snapped a nearly seven-minute scoreless drought at the 7:10-mark before Cal U stretched the lead to 28 points, 59-31, following a three-pointer by Hahn with 3:58 left to play.

The Vulcans finished the game with a .429 field-goal percentage (24-of-56) and made 10-of-11 from the free-throw line (90.9 percent). Meanwhile, the Huskies shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the floor and were one-of-six from long range. Cal U posted a 36-31 rebounding margin and forced 31 turnovers, which were converted into 34 points.

The Huskies were held without a double-digit scorer, as sophomore Leah Myers led the team with seven points. Freshman Darcy Lee finished with six points and six rebounds in the loss. Bloomsburg was prevented from scoring in double-digits in both the second and third quarters in the contest.

Cal U continues its weekend road trip tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 3, when it faces East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m.
