Vulcans cruise past Goldey-Beacom, 80-41

Cal U features four players scoring in double-digits, scores 40 points off turnovers

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 21) – The No. 4 Vulcans shot over 60 percent in the first half and allowed just six points in the third quarter on Tuesday evening while posting an 80-41 victory over Goldey-Beacom (Del.) in non-conference play at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 5-0 overall behind a 3-0 mark at home. Meanwhile, Goldey-Beacom falls to 1-4 this year after being picked fourth in the preseason CACC South poll. It marked the first time in seven seasons the Vulcans played a current member of the CACC.

Senior forward Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led four players scoring in double-digits with 17 points. She shot 8-of-13 from the floor and added five rebounds, two blocks and six steals while playing only three quarters. Parsons is averaging 24.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.6 blocks per game this season.

Redshirt sophomore Natalia Casals (Granollers, Spain/Escola Municipal del Treball) posted 13 points, three rebounds, five assists and eight steals in 29 minutes on Tuesday. Junior Mia Cushon (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals, while sophomore DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) collected six points, six assists and four steals off the bench.

The score was tied at 7-7 in the middle of the first quarter before the Vulcans scored seven-straight points to take a 14-7 lead on a jumper by junior Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) with 4:12 left in the quarter. Cal U later stretched the lead to double-digits at 22-11 in the opening seconds of the second quarter on a jumper by Jasper. The Lightning responded with a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 24-18 with 7:26 remaining before halftime. Cal U answered with a 15-4 rally over four-plus minutes to take a 39-22 lead at the 2:52-mark on a layup by Cushon, who scored eight points during the run. Following a G-B basket, the Vulcans scored the last nine points of the second quarter to take a 48-24 lead at the break.

Midway through the third quarter, Cal U started a 12-0 run that lasted over five minutes and gave the Vulcans a 63-30 lead with 9:43 left in the contest. The Lightning scored their first points in seven-plus minutes on the next possession before the Vulcans closed the game on a 17-8 run while playing primarily with reserves.

The Vulcans shot nearly 65 percent in the first half and finished the game making 52.9 percent (36-of-68) from the floor. Meanwhile, the Lightning posted a .419 field-goal percentage (18-of-43) and attempted just three free-throws in the contest. Cal U out-rebounded Goldey-Beacom by a 34-26 margin and the Vulcans scored 40 points off turnovers after collecting 23 steals that resulted in 22 fastbreak points.

Senior Britani Bryson, who has averaged a double-double the last two seasons, led the Lightning with 13 points and added five rebounds. Junior Tanner Turner-Rush finished with nine points and four rebounds in the losing effort.

Cal U is idle for over a week before opening a four-game road trip, starting on Nov. 29 against Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio, at 7:30 p.m.
