NOTES
• Cal U closes out PSAC West play by making its second trip in three weeks to Erie County when it faces Edinboro. The Vulcans scored 18 points in the fourth quarter last week to post a 31-21 win over Mercyhurst. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots rolled to a 69-20 win at Seton Hill.
• The Vulcans scored 18 points over the final nine-plus minutes to claim a 31-21 victory against Mercyhurst. Cal U trailed 14-0 three-plus minutes into the game and were down 21-13 at halftime before holding the Lakers scoreless over the final two quarters. In the fourth quarter, Cal U recorded a pair of safeties to cut the deficit to 21-17 before quarterback
Michael Keir scored on a seven-yard touchdown run with 1:26 remaining to give the Vulcans their first lead of the game. Senior
Todd Coles, Jr. then sealed the victory with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown.
• The Vulcans have won the last 12 meetings in the series with the Fighting Scots, including five-straight victories at Sox Harrison Stadium dating back to 2006.
• A longtime assistant with the program,
Wayne Bradford has posted a 6-3 record as head coach of the Fighting Scots. Bradford was appointed interim head coach in March after spending last season as the inside linebackers coach and Director of Development. He previously served a decade as the defensive coordinator under former head coach
Scott Browning and also spent seven seasons as the offensive line coach.
• After scoring nearly 120 points over the last two weeks, Edinboro enters the weekend in a three-way tie for second place in the PSAC West standings. Sophomore
Walter Fletcher ranks second in the league with both 1,437 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns this season. He has totaled over 1,000 yards and 14 scores over the last five weeks behind three 200-yard games. Senior quarterback
Jake Sisson has posted nearly 2,100 passing yards and 20 touchdowns after finishing second in the country with 41 passing touchdowns last year. Junior wide receiver
James Clark enters the weekend following one of the top performances in PSAC history, as he posted 289 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 17 catches against Seton Hill. Clark leads the league with both 82 receptions and 1,101 yards, while ranking second with 11 touchdowns. The 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, wide receiver
Ta'Nauz Gregory has amassed nearly 1,000 all-purpose yards this season with over 450 receiving yards and 500 kickoff return yards. The Fighting Scots rank in the middle of the PSAC in virtually every defensive category. Sophomore defensive back
Brandon Anderson leads the team and is third in the league with 85 tackles, while senior
Devon Groves has tallied 66 stops and three interceptions. Junior defensive back
Zuril Hendrick paces the PSAC with seven interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, after leading the team with five interceptions last season.
• Entering the last week of divisional play, the PSAC continues to have an intriguing finish in both divisions. The PSAC East features a tie between Shippensburg and West Chester for first place with a 5-1 mark and the Golden Rams own the head-to-head tiebreaker. In the PSAC West, IUP has secured a spot in next week's PSAC Championship yet the trio of Cal U, Edinboro and Slippery Rock are tied for second place in the standings.
• The latest Super Region One rankings were released on Monday with no movement in the top half, as the top-six teams remain unchanged from last week. Cal U debuted in the poll at No. 10 and Shippensburg jumped to seventh after defeating Kutztown, which fell out of the rankings after previously being seventh. The region now consists of the PSAC, MEC, NE-10 and G-MAC, which replaces the CIAA in the region.
• Cal U posted its third fourth-quarter comeback of the season last week against Mercyhurst. The Vulcans trailed 21-13 entering the fourth quarter before scoring 18 points over the last nine-plus minutes, taking their initial lead of the game with 1:26 left. Cal U has already played five games this season decided by three points or less after having to play 47 games over parts of the previous five years to equal that amount.
• The Vulcans limited Mercyhurst to only 47 rushing yards on 25 attempts last week, marking the fourth time this year an opponent has been held under the century mark. Cal U sits third in the PSAC West in rushing defense this year by yielding 126.1 yards per game. The Vulcans have allowed just three running backs over the last two seasons to finish with at least 100 rushing yards in a game.
• Last week, senior defensive back
Todd Coles, Jr. made his first career interception and returned the turnover 32 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory. It marked the third-straight game in which a member of the secondary registered an interception return for a touchdown. The Vulcans have tallied a combined seven 'pick sixes' over the last two years after posting just one from 2014-15.
• Senior wide receiver
Tom Greene posted his sixth 100-yard game of the season last week versus Mercyhurst, finishing with 104 yards and one touchdown on five catches. Greene has amassed 682 yards on 39 receptions over the last six weeks and that includes just a two-catch, eight-yard performance against Clarion. The Woodland Hills product ranks fourth in the PSAC this year with both 921 receiving yards and 55 receptions.
• Cal U extended its streak of at least one blocked kick to seven-consecutive games late in the fourth quarter last week. Freshman Asheed Page-Jones blocked a punt in the end zone and the loose ball rolled out of the end zone for a safety. Cal U still remains tied with Pace (N.Y.) of the NE-10 for the lead in NCAA Division II this year with eight blocked kicks, which is the most in recent program history.
• Senior linebacker
Cameron Tarver established a career high with 4.0 TFL against Mercyhurst last week. He also was credited with a sack after forcing an intentional grounding by the quarterback while in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Tarver, who ranks third in the PSAC with 13.0 TFL this year, is the first player with at least 4.0 TFL in a game since
Jawan Turner accomplished the feat in 2014.
• Last week, junior running back
Jalen Bell set career highs with 92 rushing yards and 22 carries against Mercyhurst. He accounted for 62 rushing yards on 14 attempts in the second half while picking up five first downs on the ground. Bell, who is a cousin of Pittsburgh Steelers standout
Le'Veon Bell, also finished with five receptions for 35 yards against the Lakers to record his second game of the year with at least 100 all-purpose yards.
• Senior kicker
Will Brazill received PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors for the third time this year on Monday. He joins Shippensburg kicker Billy Deane as the only players in the league to receive the honor three times in a season since the award was initially presented in 2015. Brazill made a pair of field goals against Mercyhurst in the first half to cut the deficit to 21-13 at halftime and converted three PAT attempts.
• Senior wide receiver
Luke Smorey completed a 38-yard pass in the second quarter last week and finished with 40 receiving yards on five catches. He is the first player other than a quarterback to attempt or complete a pass since former wide receiver Nadir Brown connected on a 53-yard pass at Slippery Rock during the 2013 season.
• Cal U recorded a pair of crucial safeties in the fourth quarter last week in its comeback win against Mercyhurst. It marked the first time in recent program history in which the Vulcans recorded more than one safety in a game. Cal U was credited the initial safety with 9:42 left after the quarterback was penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone. Six-plus minutes later, a loose ball rolled out of the end zone following a blocked punt.
