LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 28) – Behind an impressive 11 service aces on Saturday afternoon, the Vulcans snapped a four-match losing streak by cruising to a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 13-11 overall behind a 7-6 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles drop to 11-14 this season behind a 4-9-mark in conference play. Both teams remain in fourth place in their respective divisional standings.
Junior
Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) registered a career-high 16 kills on a .467 hitting percentage and sophomore
Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) tallied 13 kills on a .367 clip against the Bald Eagles. Sophomore
Samantha Raidt (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) directed the offense with 21 assists and senior
Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) added 13 assists on Saturday.
Freshman
Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) guided the defensive effort with 16 digs and tallied a team-high four service aces. Senior
Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) posted 11 digs and three service aces in the match. van Schaik and junior
Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) both controlled the net with four blocks.
Cal U recorded 13 kills on a .429 hitting percentage in the opening set to produce a 25-12 win. Lock Haven won five of the initial seven points to claim an early lead before the Vulcans scored four-unanswered to take a 6-5 lead. Following a timeout, Cal U went on a 10-2 to run to jump out to a sizeable 16-9 lead. Lock Haven responded with two quick points before the Vulcans registered a 9-1 run to close out the first set, 25-12.
In the second set, the Vulcans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Bald Eagles tallied seven-unanswered points to take a 7-4 lead. The teams traded the next two points before Lock Haven won five of eight points to claim a 13-8 advantage. The Vulcans then rallied back with an 8-1 run, which included three-consecutive kills by Priore, to reclaim a 16-14 lead. The Bald Eagles tied the match at 16-16 before Cal U registered six of next nine points to force a Lock Haven timeout. The Vulcans took a 2-0 match lead following a 3-1 run with van Schaik recording the final point, 25-20.
Cal U completed the match victory with a 25-18 win after only surrendering the lead just once in the final set. Lock Haven notched five of the opening eight points in the final set before Cal U went on a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. Following a timeout, the teams traded the next four points until the Vulcans scored four of five points to hold a 16-9 advantage. The Bald Eagles cut the deficit to 19-14 before Cal U registered five-unanswered points to take a commanding 24-14 lead. Lock Haven rallied off four-consecutive points before Priore posted a kill to complete the victory, 25-18.
The Vulcans return home on Friday, Nov. 3, when they host Shippensburg in PSAC Crossover action at 7 p.m.
