CALIFORNIA (Oct. 18) – Sophomore
Holly Jacobson (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) registered a goal late in the second half on Wednesday evening, as the Vulcans battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 3-10-2 overall with a 3-9-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles stand at 6-5-4 this season behind a 5-4-4 mark in conference action while playing in their seventh overtime match this year.
Clarion recorded the opening two shots of the contest, both going wide of the net before freshman
Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) record the first attempt for the Vulcans in the 15th minute. Four minutes later, Lynch fired a shot that went just left of the goal as the game remained tied. Senior
Kira Carberry (Odenton, Md./Arundel) notched a shot on goal at the 28:55-mark that was saved by the outstretched arms of the keeper. The match was scoreless at the break with the Vulcans holding a 5-2 shot advantage, in addition to a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagle attack registered three shots in the opening five minutes of the second half before breaking through in the 55th minute on a goal by junior Veronika Noyszewski on a ball played through by teammate senior Jess Kenny. A header by freshman Dani McNally nearly extended the Clarion lead, but the attempte hit the post. The Vulcans leveled the game at the 78:02-mark on a goal by Jacobson, who scored her second goal of the season on a shot in the bottom left corner off a deflection. Senior
Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) came up with a save in the 86th minute to send the match into overtime with the game tied at 1-1.
Colon posted four saves in the contest, including two during the overtime periods. The best opportunity of the overtime was a chance by senior
Daniela Dell'Aquila (Toronto, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic), whose shot from only a few yards out was saved by the goalie.
Clarion out-shot Cal U by a 14-12 margin in 110 minutes of action and both teams recorded five corner kicks in the match.
The Vulcans return to action next week on Oct. 25, when they travel to face Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 5 p.m.
