Men's Basketball downs Edinboro, 58-52

Richardson, Teckle record double-doubles; Vulcans set season high with 56 rebounds

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 28) – Behind double-doubles from juniors Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) and Robel Teckle (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy), the Vulcans posted a 58-52 win over Edinboro on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 8-13 overall after winning five of its last seven games. The Vulcans also now stand at 5-10 in league action, which is tied for sixth in the divisional standings. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 6-13 this season with a 4-11 record in conference action.

Richardson tallied a double-double for a consecutive game after posting 12 points on five-of-nine from the field and a career-high 13 rebounds (eight offensive). He has now posted four double-doubles this season after entering the year with none over the previous two year. Richardson is averaging 12.7 points over the last six games while shooting 72.5 percent (29-of-40) from the floor.

Teckle tallied his first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 13 points and collecting a season-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Rashawn Browne (Toronto, Ontario/Bill Crothers) added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while junior Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) finished with eight points and nine rebounds in the victory.

Edinboro jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the early minutes of the game before the Vulcans mounted a 9-1 run to take an 11-6 lead at the 15:50-mark capped by a jumper from Teckle. The Fighting Scots then tied the score on three separate occasions over the next eight minutes, but were unable to reclaim the lead each time. With the score at 22-22 and 7:03 left in the half, Cal U scored eight-unanswered points to take its largest lead of the half at 30-22. The run was keyed by back-to-back three-pointers from Browne and Teckle. Edinboro countered with five-straight points to cut the deficit down to 30-27 at the 2:22-mark before Cal U responded with the final three points before the break to take a 33-27 halftime lead.

At the start of the second half, the Vulcans extended their lead to 38-30 after a three-pointer from Sapp and a jumper from Teckle at the 18:06-mark. Edinboro trimmed the deficit down to 40-35, Browne and junior Cordell Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) made consecutive lay-ups to give Cal U a 44-35 lead, its largest lead of the game, at the 10:42-mark. Back-to-back three-pointers from Edinboro brought the score to 44-41, but Cal U responded with a 7-2 run over the next 2:44 to take a 51-43 lead. After a pair of free-throws by Browne brought to lead to 53-44, the Fighting Scots scored eight-consecutive points to make it 53-52 contest with 50 seconds left. Cal U then scored the final five points off free throws from Teckle and Smith to hold on for a 58-52 win.

Cal U shot just 32.3 percent from the field (20-of-62) after shooting at a 27.6 clip in the second half. The Vulcans also went only 19.4 percent (6-of-31) from beyond the arc in the contest. In comparison, the Fighting Scots shot a season-low 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the floor and just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from long range. Cal U finished with season highs of  56 total rebounds and 22 offensive rebounds to finish with a sizable 56-31 rebounding advantage. Cal U also held an 18-7 advantage in second-chance points.
 
Junior Jaymon Mason, the leading scorer in the PSAC at 23.8 points per game, led the Fighting Scots with 18 points after going 4-of-11 from the floor and eight-of-eight from the free-throw line. He also added five assists and four steals in the contest. Senior Sheldon Brogdon added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals in the loss.
 
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 1, when they travel to face Slippery Rock for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
