Cal U drops contest at No. 10 IUP, 78-65

Vulcans unable to overcome 20-2 run, make just two three-pointers in second half

INDIANA, Pa. (Jan. 18) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered a 78-65 loss to No. 10 IUP on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 5-13 overall with a 2-10 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 16-2 this season. IUP holds a two-game lead in the PSAC West standings with an 11-1 record in conference play.

Junior forward Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) scored a team-high 16 points after going six-of-nine from the floor and four-of-six from the charity stripe. He also posted four rebounds, two assists and two blocks while playing 28 minutes on Wednesday. Richardson is averaging 15.0 points over the last three games while shooting 78.3 percent (18-of-23) from the floor.

Fellow junior Luka Andjusic (Belgrade, Serbia/Borislav Petrov Braca) finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals at IUP, while sophomore Rashawn Browne (Toronto, Ontario/Bill Crothers) posted 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Cordell Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) added nine points off the bench in the loss.

The Crimson Hawks made five of their opening six shots in the game to jump out to a 13-4 lead with 16:21 left in the first half. Cal U later scored six-straight points to cut the deficit to 16-13 at the 14:33-mark when Richardson converted a traditional three-point play. IUP later mounted a 12-7 run over five-plus minutes to take its largest lead of the half at 39-27 with 2:17 remaining before the break. The Vulcans countered by scoring seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 41-34 at halftime after Andjusic made a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half.

Cal U cut the deficit to five points on a three-pointer by Smith with 14:02 left to play before IUP seized control of the game with a 20-2 run to take a 68-45 lead with 9:24 remaining. During the rally, the Crimson Hawks made all eight of their shots, including four-of-four from beyond the arc. The teams played nearly even over the next six minutes before Cal U closed the game on an 11-0 run to trim the deficit to 78-65.

The Vulcans shot over 55 percent in the first half before finishing the game with a .453 field-goal percentage (24-of-53). Cal U made just 2-of-13 from long range in the second half. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks shot at a 51.7 clip (31-of-60) behind 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from beyond the arc. IUP out-rebounded Cal U by a 33-26 margin and also scored 27 points off turnovers.

Junior Anthony Glover led four IUP players in double digits with 20 points behind four three-pointers. Sophomore Jacobo Diaz finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior Devon Cottrell collected 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when it hosts Mercyhurst at 5 p.m.
