Cal U earns win on penalty kick in OT, 2-1

Dell'Aquila scores game-winning goal versus Mansfield with only 1:04 left in overtime

CALIFORNIA (Sept 3) – Junior Daniela Dell'Aquila (Toronto, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 99th minute on Saturday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team earned a 2-1 overtime victory over Mansfield at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 1-1 on the season with both games against league opponents. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers open the year with a 0-1 record.

The first half was scoreless, as each team was held to just one shot attempt. Mansfield missed a scoring opportunity in the 47th minute when a shot by Danielle Lentz hit the post and bounced into the hands of senior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany).

The Mountaineers eventually took a 1-0 lead at the 80:19-mark before the Vulcans answered less than two minutes later when junior Kira Carberry (Odenton, Md./Arundel) scored on a cross from sophomore Katharina Pankratz (Coal Center, Pa/California) in the 83rd minute.

In overtime, Cal U capitalized on a handball in the box against Mansfield with just over one minute left in the period when Dell'Aquila converted a penalty kick.

Mansfield finished the game with a 9-4 advantage in shots with Cal U attempted half of its shots in overtime. The Mountaineers also posted a 6-5 edge in corner kicks with five coming in the second half.

Jayes earned the victory after making three saves in nearly 99 minutes of action. Mansfield goalkeeper Rachel Fox, an All-PSAC First-Team selection last year, posted one save in the loss.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept.7, when it hosts Seton Hill at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
