CALIFORNIA (Sept. 21) – Freshman
Cooper Amos (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team recorded a 1-0 win versus Cedarville in non-conference play at the Philipsburg Soccer Facility on Wednesday night.
With the victory, the Vulcans improves to 4-1-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-3-1 this season after winning the past three Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championships.
Both teams missed out on great scoring chances in the first half. Sophomore
Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) created space in the box to get a shot off to only be saved by Cedarville goalkeeper Graham Sachtleben in the 15th minute. Yellow Jacket sophomore Derek Braak had a scoring chance in the 26th minute that was saved by senior
Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa/Central Valley) on the right corner of the net when sophomore goaltender
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/ Pascal-Gymnasium) was caught on the other side of the net.
Cal U survived an early second half scoring chance from Cedarville senior Connor Gilmour after he ran behind the defenders and shot the ball off the crossbar in the 52nd minute to keep the game scoreless. Amos broke the tie with his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a header on a cross from the left side from Cummings, who tallied his first assist of the year.
Exner tied his career high with 10 saves to earn his fourth shutout this season, and seventh career. Sachtleben suffered the loss while making six saves in 90 minutes.
Cedarville finished the game with a 21-16 advantage in shots after each team had eight attempts in the first half, while Cal U posted a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they host Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
