CALIFORNIA (Sept. 17) – In their first action in a week, the Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss (25-20, 33-31, 25-20) to Daemen (N.Y.) in non-conference play at Hamer Hall on Saturday night.
With the loss, California falls to 7-3 overall before entering Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play next weekend. Meanwhile, Daemen improves to 6-4 this season.
Senior
Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa/McDowell) and junior
Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) each recorded nine kills. Sophomore
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa/Central Valley) added seven kills while posting a .294 hitting percentage. Senior
Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill/Lemont) directed the offense with 29 assists. Sophomore
Marisa Fanelli (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) paced the team with five digs against the Wildcats, while Hayes tallied three blocks.
In the first set, the Wildcats went on an early 8-2 run to take an 8-5 lead. Hayes then recorded a kill to pull the Vulcans to within two points before the Wildcats scored seven-unanswered points to take a commanding 15-6 lead. Cal U eventually scored three-straight points to cut the lead to 20-16 before Daemen claimed a 25-20 victory in the first set.
Daemen took a 7-5 lead in the second set before Cal U responded with four-straight points to gain a 9-7 advantage. The Wildcats answered with four-straight points of their own to retake the lead at 12-11. Despite holding a 19-14 lead, Cal U allowed Daemen to hold a 25-24 edge before Hayes recorded a game-tying kill. The two teams battled back and forth until the Wildcats eventually claimed a 33-31 win.
The Wildcats scored five-unanswered en route to claiming a 15-7 lead in the third set. The teams traded runs of two-straight points with Daemen holding an 18-10 advantage. The Vulcans then took seven of the next eight points to trim the lead to 19-17 before the Wildcats completed the sweep by winning six of the final nine points to close the third set with a 25-20 victory.
Cal U returns to action when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play by hosting Cheyney on Friday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
