NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium this weekend for its latest home-opener since 2010. Last week, the Vulcans rolled to a 79-3 victory at Cheyney. Meanwhile, Millersville suffered a 38-24 loss to Seton Hill after allowing over 530 yards of total offense.
• In the initial game under first-year head coach
Gary Dunn, the Vulcans scored their most points in over a decade in a dominating 79-3 victory at Cheyney. Junior quarterback
Michael Keir finished with five touchdown passes and 215 passing yards in his first career start. Defensively, the Vulcans limited the Wolves to only 168 yards of total offense with just 11 rushing yards. Linebackers
Luke Hrapchak and
Brendan Blair returned interceptions for touchdowns on back-to-back drives early in the third quarter. The 79 points scored are the most in a game since Sept. 10, 2005.
• The Vulcans and Marauders are meeting for only the fourth time since 1988. Cal U won the initial seven meetings before Millersville won three-straight times with its last win coming in 1986.
• In his fourth year as head coach,
Greg Breitbach has posted a 5-30 overall record with the Marauders with no more than two wins in a season. Millersville ranked second in the PSAC in pass defense last year and finished with its highest ranking in total defense in 15 years. Breitbach spent eight years on the coaching staff at North Dakota, including six seasons as offensive coordinator, before coming to Millersville.
• Last year, Millersville finished with two victories after winning just one game in both 2013 and 2014. The Marauders rank in the middle of the 18-team PSAC this fall with 263.5 passing yards per game behind the play of senior quarterback
J.J. Paige. Last season, he passed for over 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns with only five interceptions on nearly 250 attempts. Junior wide receiver
Kevin Wiggins leads the team with 13 receptions for 141 yards after totaling over 40 catches in each of the last two years. Sophomore
Phil Overton anchors the rushing offense, as he leads the team with 117 yards on 26 attempts. Millersville sits fifth in the league in scoring defense at 22.5 points through two games this season. Junior linebacker
Sean Dugan is tied for the PSAC lead with 23 tackles after finishing third on the team in tackles last year. Freshman
Jaleel Robinson registered a pair of interception returns for touchdowns in the Week 1 victory against Pace. Sophomore transfer
Jarrid Satterfield registered nine stops and three pass break-ups last week versus Seton Hill. On special teams, senior
Evan Stahl is handling both the punting and kicking duties for the third-straight year. He is averaging a career-best 45.8 yards per punt in 2016, which is a nearly an eight-yard improvement from last season.
• Since 2004, Cal U holds a combined 29-10 record against PSAC East opponents with a 15-4 mark at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans and Marauders last met during the final week of the 2013 regular season. The programs are facing each other for the fourth time in the past 11 years after the schools didn't play each other from 1988-2005.
• The Vulcans were picked to finish third in the preseason PSAC West poll after ranking third place in the divisional standings in each of the last four years. Meanwhile, Millersville was chosen seventh in the preseason PSAC East poll following a two-win campaign in 2015.
• Cal U scored a staggering 79 points in last week's season-opening win at Cheyney, which marked the most points in a game for the program in over a decade. In Week 2 of the 2005 season, the Vulcans claimed an 88-12 win at Mansfield to match the most points scored in school history. The 79 points scored by Cal U last week are the most points in NCAA Division II this year and the fourth-most in all NCAA divisions.
• Senior linebacker
Jordan Lardani set career highs in both TFL and sacks last week after starting a combined nine games over the previous two seasons on the defensive line. He registered 3.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks in the season-opener against Cheyney. Lardani is the first player with at least 3.5 TFL in a game since former teammate
Jeff Knox, Jr. registered 3.5 TFL at Clarion in October 2014.
• The Vulcans scored 11 touchdowns in their victory last week, including two on interception returns. Cal U also recorded its first safety since October 2014 when the Cheyney punter batted an errant snap out of the back of the end zone.
• In the win last week, Cal U scored a whopping 30 points in the third quarter after holding a 42-3 lead at halftime. The Vulcans tallied all 30 points within a span of just 5 minutes, 18 seconds on the clock and ran only four offensive plays during the run. Cal U last scored at least 30 points in a quarter against Slippery Rock in 2014, collecting 31 points in the second quarter before finishing with a 48-26 victory.
• Cal U started the same five offensive linemen at the same position in all 11 games last year, but both starters on the right side were lost due to graduation. Seniors
Zach Morehead (left tackle) and
Tyler Peerson (left guard), along with junior
Taylor Nikithser (center), each opened 2016 in the same position they played last season. Sophomore
Austin Jacobs earned his first career start at right guard, while redshirt freshman
Craig McCorkle made his college debut at right tackle.
• Under first-year defensive coordinator
Mike Craig, the Vulcans held Cheyney to just 168 yards of total offense on 69 plays last week. The Wolves managed only 11 rushing yards despite 34 attempts. Cal U last held an opponent to under 200 yards of total offense in 2013 when Seton Hill registered 173 yards on 72 plays in a 33-7 contest. The Griffins were also the last team to be held under the century mark on the ground against the Vulcans, rushing for 98 yards in 2015.
• Senior
Garry Brown moved up on the all-time record list in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns against Cheyney. He now ranks behind only
A.J. Jackson in school history with 23 career receiving touchdowns and sits fourth with 2,385 receiving yards. Brown has caught at least one touchdown in eight of his last 11 games played with eight of his 13 scores during that span going for at least 20 yards.
• Last week, junior
Luke Hrapchak and sophomore
Brendan Blair each recorded an interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter at Cheyney. It marked the first time the Vulcans returned multiple interceptions for touchdowns in a game since defensive backs
Dionte Henry and
Terrence Johnson accomplished the feat at IUP in 2007. Last year, Cal U finished with 19 interceptions as a team and returned only one for a touchdown.
• Junior
Nick Grissom rushed for a game-high 109 yards last week at Cheyney after missing all of last season due to an injury suffered in the spring of 2015. He eclipsed the century mark on just six carries and finished with a staggering average of 18.2 yards per attempt. Grissom, who led the Vulcans in rushing in 2014, is the first player to rush for over 100 yards on less than 10 attempts since
Brandon Lombardy in 2006 (Clarion).
• Junior
Michael Keir finished with five passing touchdowns last week while making his first career start at Cheyney. He posted 215 passing yards on 10-of-12 attempts after entering the year with only eight career pass attempts. Keir led the offense to a touchdown on each of his seven drives. The Philadelphia native is the fifth different quarterback since the 2008 campaign to throw five touchdowns in a game.
• Cal U is playing its home opener in Week 3 of the regular season, which is the latest home debut since 2010 when the Vulcans hosted East Stroudsburg on Sept. 18.
