Second half leads Cal U to win at Daemen, 3-0

Vulcans record second-straight shutout, off to best start since 2011 season

AMHERSTY, N.Y. (Sept 10) – Behind a second-half surge highlighted by three goals from three different players, the Vulcans claimed a 3-0 victory at Daemen (N.Y.) in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 3-0-0 overall to mark its best start since 2011 when it opened the year with a 6-0-1 mark. Meanwhile, the Wildcats fall to 0-4 with the loss.

The Vulcans helding an 11-6 shot advantage over the Wildcats in first half yet the teams were scoreless after 45 minutes of play.

Cal U scored its opening goal of the game in the 54th minute when sophomore Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa/West Allegheny) connected on a one-time volley off a corner kick from senior Cory Kuzilla (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek). Senior Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) increased the lead to 2-0 at the 60:15-mark with an assist from both sophomore Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and freshman Kyle Richards (Coatesville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite). The Vulcans added an insurance goal in the 90th minute when freshman Oscar Carvajal (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Orange), who was making his college debut, scored on a header off a feed from sophomore Ahmad Awadella (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).

Sophomore Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) recorded five saves in his fifth career shutout. Daemen sophomore Justin Figler posted eight saves in the losing effort.

The Vulcans finished with a commanding 25-11 edge in shots and held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Cal U returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when it hosts Slippery Rock at 7 p.m.
