SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – Despite a career-high 10 saves by senior goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), the Vulcans opened the season with a 2-0 loss at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Thursday afternoon.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team has opened the year against Shippensburg in each of the last three seasons. The Vulcans were held scoreless in their season-opener for the first time since the 2007 campaign.
Both teams were scoreless for the majority of the first half before the Raiders took a 1-0 lead at the 42:09-mark on a goal by Tori Mills. Shippensburg threatened to add to the lead in the 55th minute with three shots in just 25 seconds, including one which hit the post. The Raiders eventually added to their lead at the 59:05-mark when Kat Hartner scored on a header following a corner kick.
An All-PSAC selection in 2015, Jayes set a career high with 10 saves while making the 48th start of her career. She is the first Cal U player to tally double-digit saves in a game since
Ashley Magruda posted 12 saves during the 2012 season. Shippensburg junior Leah Roy registered the shutout with two saves in 90 minutes.
The Raiders out-shot the Vulcans by a sizeable 26-4 margin after attempting 17 shots in the second half. Shippensburg also finished with an 8-2 edge in corner kicks with seven kicks following halftime.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when it hosts Mansfield at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex starting at 3 p.m.
