Softball records doubleheader sweep at Edinboro

Seven Vulcans record multi-hit games, Price finishes 6-for-8 with four runs scored

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 15) – The No. 10 Vulcans scored a combined 17 runs (11 unearned) on Friday afternoon while claiming a doubleheader sweep at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 6-3 and 11-8.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 25-1 overall after losing its season opener. The Vulcans also remain undefeated in divisional action this season with a 12-0 mark. Meanwhile, Edinboro falls to 8-16 this year with a 2-8 record in league play.

In Game 1, the Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-out single before adding to their lead in the third with a bases-loaded hit by pitch with two outs. Edinboro held the lead until the sixth inning when Cal U scored four runs in the top of the inning and later added two insurance runs in the seventh.

Cal U opened the sixth with a double by sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) before scoring on an error that allowed senior first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) to reach safely. Following a sacrifice bunt, Reicoff scored on a throwing error and freshman left fielder Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) later reached on a two-out walk. The Vulcans then took a 4-2 lead when freshman Emilee Downing (Groveport, Ohio/Groveport Madison) delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double.

Edinboro manufactured one run on two singles and a stolen base in the bottom of the sixth before Robblee lined a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh to give Cal U a 6-3 lead. The Fighting Scots were then retired in order in the bottom of the inning.

Price went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Downing and Robblee each collected a pair of RBI.

Senior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) improved to 12-1 this season after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while registering eight strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Edinboro starter Carley Nasca (3-6) suffered the loss after yielding six runs (all unearned) on five hits and six walks in 7.0 innings – recording 17 of her 21 outs via groundout.

In Game 2, junior catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while junior right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Price both tallied three hits and scored twice. Senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Reicoff posted two hits and three RBI, while senior second baseman Erica Vallecorsa (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) collected two hits and scored twice.

The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Vulcans tied the score in the second. Cal U scored its first run of the game on an error before Jahoda delivered an RBI single and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Reicoff. The Vulcans scored four runs, all unearned, on five hits and one error in the top of the third to take a 7-3 lead. Sophomore designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) reached on an error and later advanced to third on a single by Vallecorsa before Jahoda lined a two-run single through the middle. Price and Reicoff later registered back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Vulcans a 7-3 lead.

In the fifth, Jahoda and Finley started the inning with consecutive singles before scoring on a ground-out and an RBI double by Smarra. Edinboro countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 9-6 before Cal U answered with a two-out RBI single by Jahoda in the sixth. The Vulcans collected three-straight singles to start the top of the seventh with Price scoring on a RBI by Smarra. Edinboro trimmed the score 11-8 with a two-run homer by left fielder Brooke Callaghan before Cal U made a pitching change.

Senior starter Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) moved to 8-0 this year after surrendering six runs (all earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. Robblee earned her second save of the year after retiring all three batters she faced in the seventh. Edinboro reliever Kerri Stevens (2-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs (all unearned) on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 16, when it hosts a doubleheader against Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
