Cal U posts doubleheader split at Seton Hill

Marcus, Wastchak each homer; Yourgal earns complete-game victory in Game 2

GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 26) -- The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team completed its weekend series by splitting a doubleheader at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, falling 9-5 in Game 1 before earning a 6-2 victory in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon.

With the split, the Vulcans move to 13-11 overall with a 6-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Griffins move to 17-8 with a 5-3 record in conference action.

In Game 1, senior center fielder Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) led off the game with a triple before scoring on a single up the middle by junior second baseman Danny McGrath (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional). Seton Hill tied the game in the bottom half of the first after a two-out single scored a runner from third. Cal U took the lead again in the top of the second after a single by sophomore shortstop Austin Logan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) allowed sophomore third baseman Garrett Brooks (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) to score after reaching on a one-out triple to make the score 2-1. The Vulcans extended the lead in the third after a two-run homer from senior first baseman David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) and again in the fourth after an RBI ground-out from Fennell, 5-1.

Seton Hill cut the lead in the bottom of the fourth after the first two batters reached base and advanced to second and third base following a sacrifice bunt. Both runners later scored on a throwing error, 5-3. The Griffins tied the score in the fifth after a two-out single brought the game to 5-5 before scoring four runs in the sixth inning, 9-5.

Sophomore Matt Carter (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) suffered the loss (0-4) after surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Kevin Neumann earned the victory (2-0) after throwing 4.0 innings of scoreless relief. Brooks was 3-for-3 with one run scored, while Fennell and McGrath both tallied two hits.

In Game 2, the Griffins scored first in the second after a one-out single with a runner on third to take a 1-0 lead. Cal U tied the score in the third after Fennell was hit by a pitch and stole second base before scoring on a two-out single from McGrath. Seton Hill almost retook the lead in the bottom of the inning before a runner was thrown out at home by Fennell after trying to score from second. Sophomore first baseman Chris Wastchak (Peters Twp., Pa./Peters Township) belted a lead-off solo homer in the fourth to increase the lead to 2-1.

The Vulcans rallied for a four-run seventh inning after a walk, single and fielding error loaded the bases - all with one out. Wastchak drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed sophomore third baseman Levi Krause (East Berlin, Pa./Spring Grove) to score from third. Freshman designated hitter Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) hit into a fielder's choice that scored Fennell after a fielding error kept the bases loaded. Grace followed with a two-run single to score Wastchak and McGrath to increase the lead to 6-1. The Griffins responded with one run after a two-out double scored a runner from second.

Starting pitcher junior Joe Yourgal (Millersville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) earned the win (2-1) after tossing a complete game. In 7.0 innings, he allowed two runs (both earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks, while tossing just 81 pitches. Tyler Morder suffered the loss (3-1) after scattering four hits and surrendering two runs (both earned) in 4.1 innings. Wastchak went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI.

Cal U returns to action Friday, April 1, with a doubleheader against Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1 p.m.
