CALIFORNIA (Feb. 3) – Junior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and sophomore
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) each scored 19 points and combined to shoot 14-for-22 from the field on Wednesday evening, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team defeated Pitt-Johnstown 84-66 at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
After the victory, the Vulcans improve to 15-5 overall and take sole possession of first place in the divisional standings with a 13-4 mark, as IUP suffered a loss at Mercyhurst on Wednesday. With the loss, Pitt-Johnstown falls to 7-15 overall with a 4-12 mark in league action.
Glenn nearly finished with a triple-double, scoring 19 points while adding 11 assists and seven steals, plus six rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes. She also moved past Kim Nowakowski (2004-07) for No. 13 on the all-time scoring list with 1,256 points. Glenn is now just four free-throws made shy of tying the school record of 477 held by Kayla Smith (2006-11).
Barrett added 19 points for the Vulcans, which is her highest scoring game since finishing with 21 points on Jan. 6 against West Chester. She shot 8-of-10 from the field and added four rebounds while playing only 25 minutes due to foul trouble in the first half.
Junior
Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) scored a season-high 14 points on four-of-nine shooting, while sophomore
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added 12 points despite also battling foul trouble in the first half. Freshman
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) tallied 12 points on five-of-eight attempts in 19 minutes off the bench.
The Lady Cats began the game scoring the first two baskets to open up a 4-0 lead before the Vulcans answered with back-to-back jumpers from Parsons and Wright to tie the game. Over the next three minutes, UPJ shot five-for-six from the field, including a three-pointer at the 5:05-mark in the first quarter, to extend its lead to 15-8. Suckling hit her first of two-three pointers with 4:45 left to cut the deficit to 15-11 before the Lady Cats answered with consecutive layups to take a 19-11 advantage with 3:25 to play in the first. The Vulcans trailed 20-19 at the end of the first quarter after Glenn scored the final six points, going four-for-four at the charity stripe and beating the buzzer with a lay-in.
Cal U opened the second quarter with a Glenn basket and free-throw to cap off a 9-0 run, all points scored by Glenn, extending from the 1:21-mark in the first quarter to the 9:34-mark in the second quarter. After a Lady Cat turnover, the Vulcans stretched the lead to 28-24 on a jumper from freshman
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) with 5:22 left in the first half. UPJ out-scored Cal U 13-6 over the final 4:30 and took a 37-34 lead at halftime, finishing three-for-four from the field and five-for-six at the charity stripe during that span.
The Lady Cats scored the opening two points of the second half on a lay-up to give them a 39-34 lead before the Vulcans answered with five-straight points from Barrett to tie the game 39-39. The Vulcans held the lead for the remainder of the game after a Parsons jumper at the 7:58-mark gave them a 43-41 advantage. Cal U forced nine turnovers and closed the third quarter out-scoring UPJ by a 21-8 margin over the final 7:58 to extend its lead to 62-49.
Both teams traded points for the initial 2:48 of the fourth quarter with the Vulcans holding a 66-53 lead over the Lady Cats. Wright connected on a three-pointer at the 7:22-mark and Suckling added a lay-in with 3:10 left in the game to begin and end a 12-5 Cal U run, opening up its largest lead of the game at 78-58.
Cal U shot 66.7 percent in the second half (20-of-30) and finished the contest shooting 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the field. The Vulcans forced a season-high 26 turnovers and out-scored the Lady Cats 26-7 in points off turnovers. UPJ finished the game shooting at a 50.9 clip (28-of-55) from the floor and held a significant 37-29 rebounding advantage.
Senior Jasmine Harper led the Lady Cats with 18 points off the bench and freshman Ana Hollen added 17 points. Junior Jamie Tabon also contributed 14 points and recorded six rebounds in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when they host Davis & Elkins in non-conference play with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
