Vulcans fall twice on opening day in Virginia

Cal U allows game-winning run in top of the ninth versus Post, strikes out 23 times in two games

DINWIDDE, Va. (Feb. 27) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team suffered a pair of losses on the opening day of its weekend trip to Virginia, falling 4-3 to Post (Conn.) and 14-1 to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.

With the losses, the Vulcans fall to 3-3 overall after opening the season last weekend with a four-game series at home.

Against Post (2-2), the teams were tied at 3-3 entering the top of the ninth with all six runs being accounted for by home runs. The Eagles drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and manufactured the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice bunt and single.

Both teams left runners on second and third before Post took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a three-run homer by designated hitter Rafael Tous. The Vulcans stranded runners on the corners in the bottom of the sixth before tying the score in the seventh. Freshman first baseman Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) led off with a single before sophomore Garrett Brooks (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) delivered a two-run, pinch-hit homer. Sophomore shortstop Austin Logan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) followed with a solo homer, as Cal U tied the score with back-to-back homers.

Webb collected two of the team's six hits, finishing 2-for-4 with one run scored. Sophomore Matt Carter (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) suffered the loss after allowing one run (earned) on one hit in 2.0 innings of relief. Senior starter Jack Dennis (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park) took a no-decision after surrendering three runs (all earned) on three hits and four walks in 7.0 innings.

Against East Stroudsburg (5-0), senior center fielder Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) posted two of the team's six hits. The Vulcans used six different pitchers, including four that made their college debuts, and senior starter GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (all earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.

East Stroudsburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo homer by shortstop Conner Crookham before Cal U tied the score in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI double by Webb. The Warriors answered with three runs in the third and one more in the fourth before center fielder Casey Saverio belted a three-run homer in the fifth.

Saverio added a solo homer in the seventh before the Warriors scored five runs on three hits – all singles – in the eighth.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 28, when it faces Shepherd in Colonial Heights, Virginia, at approximately 5 p.m.
