Vulcans close season with loss to Edinboro, 79-75

Brown ends 20-year tenure as head coach at Cal U with a record of 365-207

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 24) – In the last game of head coach Bill Brown's career, the Vulcans suffered a 79-75 loss to Edinboro on Senior Night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team closes the year with a 7-21 overall record after losing its last 10 games. The Vulcans finish the year in ninth place in the divisional standings with a 4-18 mark. Meanwhile, Edinboro improves to 15-10 this season and earns the third seed in PSAC West for the league tournament behind a 14-8 mark in conference play.

Brown finishes his career with a 365-210 record and a .635 winning percentage during his 20-year tenure with the Vulcans. He sits fifth in league history in victories and closes a 30-year career as head coach with a record of 490-337.

Sophomore Luka Andjusic (Belgrade, Serbia/Borislav Petrov Braca) scored a team-high 17 points (all second half) after shooting 5-of-10 from the three-point territory. He made at least five three-pointers in a game five times this year and finished third in the league with 66 treys. Andjusic also posted four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the loss.

Classmate Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) finished with 14 points (12 first half) and four rebounds on Wednesday. Senior Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) and sophomore Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) both added 13 points, while Jabbie collected eight assists.

Cal U scored the opening six points of the game before Edinboro countered with seven-unanswered points to take a 7-6 lead with 17:04 left in the first half. The Vulcans quickly regained the lead by scoring five-straight points to take an 11-7 lead on a jumper by sophomore Nick Miller (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) with 14:59 remaining. Edinboro then mounted an 11-4 run over three-plus minutes to take an 18-15 lead at the 11:14-mark. The teams traded points for several minutes before the Vulcans scored six-straight to take a 25-24 lead with 6:11 left in the first half. Edinboro later tied the game at 32-32 before the game was delayed, and eventually prompted an early halftime due to water on the floor, with 1:27 remaining on the clock. When play resumed, the Fight Scots took a 35-34 lead when time was exhausted in the first half.

The Fighting Scots started the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 43-36 lead with 17:23 left to play. Cal U answered back with six-straight points to trim the deficit to 43-42 after Jabbie converted a three-point play at the 15:36-mark. The Vulcans later took their first lead of the second half at 48-47 on a jumper by Jabbie with 14:04 remaining. Edinboro then mounted a 16-4 rally after making seven of nine shots to claim a 63-52 lead with 9:17 remaining. After the teams traded points, the Vulcans scored seven-straight points to cut the deficit to 68-64 on a layup by Andjusic with 4:55 left in the game. Cal U managed to trim the deficit to as low as three points, 70-67, before Edinboro later answered with eight-straight points to take a 76-68 lead at the 1:41-mark.  The Vulcans countered with a three-pointer by Andjusic and dunk by Richardson to cut the deficit to 76-73 with 53 seconds left. Edinboro converted one of two at the charity stripe before Richardson made a layup with 24 seconds remaining to make it a 77-75 deficit. However, the Vulcans were unable to score during the closing seconds of the game.

Cal U shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the floor, including 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Edinboro made 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field and converted 72.0 percent (18-of-25) from the free-throw line. The Fighting Scots held a 38-29 rebounding advantage, while the Vulcans committed just 11 turnovers.

Edinboro sophomore Jaymon Mason scored a game-high 28 points after shooting 11-of-16 from the floor. He also added three rebounds, seven assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Senior Henri Wade-Chatman finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the win.
