Men's Basketball falls to Seton Hill, 83-68

Trio of Miller, Bellhy and Richardson combine for 44 points

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 13) — Despite a career-high 19 points from sophomore Nick Miller (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver), the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered an 83-68 loss at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Vulcans extend their losing streak to seven games and drop to 7-18 on the year with a 4-15 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 11-12 overall behind a 9-10 conference record and have won four of their last five contests.

Miller ended the day shooting 7-of-15 from the floor, including three treys, while making his return to the starting line-up. He also recorded three rebounds and one assist in 29 minutes on Saturday.

Senior Nate Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and one assist in 23 minutes off the bench, while sophomore Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) registered 12 points on five-of-nine shooting and a team-high eight rebounds with two assists, two blocks and one steal. Senior Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) also posted nine points and six assists in the loss. 

The Vulcans scored first before the Griffins countered with a 12-2 run that spanned over five minutes to give them a 12-4 lead with 14:23 left in the first half. The two teams traded scores before Cal U worked the deficit down to 14-13 after scoring seven-straight points, capped by a pair of free-throws from Miller at the 10:13-mark. After a three-pointer from Seton Hill, the Vulcans rallied for a 10-2 run over two minutes to take a 23-21 lead with 6:42 remaining in the half. The Griffins responded with a 10-3 rally to retake the lead before Cal U posted 11 of the final 17 points of the half to tie the score, 37-37, at halftime. 

Seton Hill opened the second half scoring nine-consecutive points in part of an 11-2 run that stretched over almost four minutes to take a 48-39 lead with 16:20 left. After trading scores, the Griffins mounted an 8-2 run to build the lead to 59-45 at the 12:48-mark. The Vulcans were able to score five-straight points before Seton Hill responded with six-consecutive points to make the score 65-50 with 11:03 remaining in the second half. Cal U was able to score seven of the next 11 points before the Griffins countered with a 9-2 run to increase the lead to 78-59 at the 4:13-mark. The Vulcans rallied for nine-consecutive points, capped by a jumper from sophomore Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro), before Seton Hill posted the final two scores to win the game, 83-68.

Cal U shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the floor after shooting at a 42.8 clip in the first half. In comparison, the Griffins made 53.4 percent (31-of-58) from the field, including 12-of-19 from beyond the arc. Seton Hill also out-rebounded the Vulcans by a 36-33 margin.

Sophomore Trevor Blondin and junior Noah Davis both tallied 25 points for the Griffins, while redshirt sophomore Spencer Casson led the team with nine rebounds and four blocks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, as they travel to face Gannon in PSAC West action at 7:30 p.m.
