No. 2 Women's Basketball falls at Edinboro, 71-54

Vulcans suffer first loss of the season; Cal U allowed 15-straight points in third quarter

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 30) – The Vulcans were unable to overcome a lengthy scoreless drought in the third quarter on Friday evening and suffered a 71-54 loss at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at McComb Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 11-1 this season behind a 5-1 mark in league play. The Vulcans have won just twice in the last eight meetings against the Fighting Scots at McComb Fieldhouse dating back to the 2010-11 season. Meanwhile, Edinboro extends its win streak to 10 games and improves to 10-2 overall with a 6-0 record in conference action.

Senior guard Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led the team in scoring with 15 points after going 7-of-18 from the floor and attempted just one free-throw. She also paced the team with seven rebounds and added five assists, two blocks and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. Glenn has now scored in double-digits in all 12 games this season and 52-consecutive games overall dating back to February 2015.

Junior Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two blocks after battling foul trouble in the first half. Classmate Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) added 10 points, four rebounds, five assists, two blocks and three steals in the loss. Sophomore Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) posted six points, two assists and three steals in her first career start on Friday.

Edinboro made six of its initial eight shots on Friday to open the game on a 12-3 run with 4:40 left in the first quarter, while Cal U was held to one-of-nine from the floor. The Vulcans worked the deficit down to 20-15 in the opening minute of the second quarter with a pair of baskets in less than 30 seconds. The Fighting Scots responded with a 9-2 rally in just over two minutes to take their largest lead of the half at 29-17 with 7:15 left before halftime. Cal U countered with nine-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 29-26 on a jumper by Barrett at the 4:43-mark in the second quarter. The teams then traded points for the remainder of the half with Glenn converting a three-point play with 58 seconds left to make the score 36-33 at the break.

The Vulcans tallied the opening two baskets of the second half to take a 37-36 lead on a layup by Glenn with 8:22 left in the third quarter. However, Edinboro then scored 15-straight points to build the lead to 51-37 at the 2:38-mark in the quarter. During the run, the Fighting Scots made five-of-seven from the floor and four-of-four from the free-throw line, while the Vulcans missed four shots and committed four turnovers. Cal U snapped a nearly six-minute scoreless streak with a three-pointer by senior Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) and closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to trim the deficit to single digits at 54-45. The Vulcans scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to seven points at 54-47 before the teams traded points for the next five minutes. Edinboro sealed the victory by scoring the last eight points of the game, as Cal U made its last field goal at the 4:56-mark.

Cal U finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor and attempted a season-low 12 free-throws. Meanwhile, Edinboro made 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the field and converted 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the charity stripe. The Fighting Scots registered a sizeable 43-22 rebounding advantage and scored 44 points in the paint, while the Vulcans forced 24 turnovers on Friday.

Sophomore Jontay Walton, a NCAA Division I transfer from UMass-Lowell, scored a game-high 23 points off the bench after going 9-of-16 from the floor. Senior guard Katie Fischer added 17 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the victory.

The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they travel to face Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at the Hammermill Center with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
